SANDY — Sergi Solans continued his red-hot return to form Saturday night when Real Salt Lake needed it most, but the club may benefit just as much by another return, as well.

Solans notched his second brace in five matches, and Dominik Marczuk added a goal in Justen Glad’s first competitive match in nearly five months, a 3-0 win over St. Louis City SC at America First Field.

Three days after St. Louis won the U.S. Open Cup on penalty kicks over Columbus, RSL punched first with a must-win mentality — and never let up to collect its first run of back-to-back wins since August 8-11 in Leagues Cup and first in MLS play since before the FIFA men’s World Cup break in July.

“I think in all phases, we played fantastic,” RSL manager Pablo Mastroeni told reporters after the match. “But we’ve got no time to celebrate.

“We’ve got to win out,” he added, reiterating a stance from last week. “This is a good performance to build upon.”

Real Salt Lake nearly broke through in the 39th minute, but Noel Caliskan’s attempt to chip the keeper on a pass from Morgan Guilavogui was blocked by wild last-man defense from the visitors.

Instead, Guilavogui turned a pass from Luc de Fougerolles into the box less than two minutes later into a give-and-go combination with Solans for the rookie’s team-high 12th goal of the season.

Tomás Ostrák was sent off with a red card for a bad foul in the 43rd minute, and the visitors played a man down after entering halftime down a goal.

Dominik Marczuk doubled the excitement — or the pain, depending on your shade of a red-ish hue Saturday evening — with a screamer from distance. The Polish international took a pass from — you guessed it — de Fougerolles in the 53rd minute and uncorked a firecracker into the near post that doubled the host’s advantage, 2-0.

Solans struck for his brace in the 59th minute with a tap-in from Saba Lobjanidze following a fast break from Guilavogui that stretched the lead to 3-0.

With the result secured, all that was left was the story.

Justen Glad took a big step toward completing his story Saturday night when the RSL homegrown center back entered the playing surface for Philip Quinton at the hour mark.

The veteran defender made his May 23, before an infamous adductor injury that kept him sidelined through the summer and into the early fall.

But Glad’s return sparked Salt Lake, even with all three goals finished against a 10-man St. Louis side.

The 29-year-old defender was strong in the air, good at winning duels, and the usual solid defender he’s been known to be in his decade of professional experience in the RSL system.

He also joked that he was “ready to go 90 if you need me,” Mastroeni said, adding that Glad spoke to the group before the game “even though he wasn’t starting.”

“That’s always his mentality,” Mastroeni said.

“I thought he was excellent tonight,” he added. “We couldn’t get him back at a better time. And having said that, I thought Phil had a really good 60 minutes, as well.”

With Austin FC looming on Wednesday, the must-win games continue as Salt Lake tries to pull itself back into one of nine playoff positions in the Western Conference.

Kickoff against Los Verdes is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. MT at Q2 Stadium on Apple TV.

HERRIMAN — Waterford’s girls soccer team may have had a good feeling that one goal may be enough in Saturday’s 2A championship final against Maeser Prep.

The last time the Ravens and Lions met, Cami Simmons scored in the second extra-time period to lift Maeser to a 1-0 victory — a win that likely played a significant role in handing the Lions the No. 1 overall seed in the 2A state tournament.

Nearly a month later, one was enough again.

Jessica Miller, a former goalkeeper who started at center back, scored the lone goal off her right foot to open the second half as the Ravens defended last year’s title with a 1-0 win over Maeser Prep at Zions Bank Stadium.

It’s the ninth championship in program history for the Ravens (15-5), breaking a tie with Alta and Rowland Hall for the most since the Utah High School Activities Association sanctioned girls soccer in 1989.

“There’s nothing like it,” Miller said. “Last year, this year; there’s nothing like it.”

After a scoreless first half, Waterford struck first when Miller took a touch following a corner kick and finished inside the box in the 42nd minute to take a 1-0 lead.

“I know Berklee’s crosses super well, and I just knew I had to get in front of 21,” Miller said of her goal. "I was so happy, pure ecstasy. I knew that if we could break it open and get one goal, then we could keep it.”

Then she went to work doing what she did best: defending her butt off to help clinch a second title for fellow seniors Lexee Hasebi, Eva Silvero and the rest of the Ravens’ defense in Savvy Williams, London Taix and Andrea Sun.

“Going back to my defense, that was just normal,” Miller said, “to go back with Savvy, London and Andrea.”

HERRIMAN — No second is too late for Ogden’s girls soccer team, and the defending 3A champs proved that up until the final minute of the 2026 season.

Elle Weston scored a brace in the final match of her prolific high school career, including a game-winner with 55 seconds remaining to help Ogden run it back with a 2-1 win over Manti in the 3A championship finale Saturday at Zions Bank Stadium.

The senior who has committed to Baylor capped 82-goal career in Ogden with her 15th and 16th goals of the season — both in the final 20 minutes — as the Tigers (15-6) overturned a 1-0 second-half deficit to stun the top-seeded Templars.

But even when McKinzee Chidester’s breakaway finish from Madelyn Bridges gave Manti (19-2) a 1-0 lead in the 66th minute, Ogden coach Alexis King didn’t panic.

Easy to do when you have the reigning 3A player of the year in Weston, who headed home Gwenyth Aardema’s cross from the corner past Manti goalkeeper Averie Jo Robbins to equalize around the 75th minute.

You want drama? Ogden will give it to you.

“I won’t believe we lost until there’s less than a minute on the clock. I have seen my girls so many times fight — and fight and fight — until the end,” said King, whose team also came back to beat Morgan on Alonda Ayala’s 74th-minute gamewinner in Thursday’s semifinals. “Today is just another testament.

“I told Elle, we have seven minutes left; we can still win this game. And she went out and finished it. She’s always been a player who steps up whenever we need it, and I’m really proud of her and our whole team, in general.”

Ogden had the bulk of possession in the first half, but struggled to finish in front of goal.

Manti had perhaps the best chance before the break in the 37th minute, but Chidester’s shot was kick-saved in front of goal en route to the scoreless halftime stalemate.

But Chidester put the Templars in front midway through the second half, setting up a frantic finish that ended with Weston bending a screamer inside the far corner at the start of the 80th minute to secure the win.

“Every second counts,” she said. “We’ve won two big games because Alonda scored in the last minute. She’s taught us that every second counts, and we can always score — and I think we really felt that in this game.”

SANDY — Mandy McGlynn was making the rounds after collecting a one-save shutout in the Utah Royals’ regular-season home finale Friday night when she saw a couple of fans watching another game nearly 800 miles away in Portland.

The Thorns had just gone up, 1-0 on North Carolina, a result that — combined with the Royals’ scoreless draw with Seattle — would clinch a first-of-its-kind NWSL Playoff berth for the club.

“We’re staying until the game’s over,” one fan said to her.

“You’re awesome,” she answered back, in between signing gloves, shirts and autographs and taking photos with fans around the stadium.

None of them went home disappointed, even if their travel was delayed 30 minutes or so.

Marie Müller’s 60th-minute rip didn’t just clinch a postseason berth for Portland, but also Utah and Kansas City as the NWSL’s playoff picture nearly came into shape Friday night a week before Decision Day.

With one match remaining, only one playoff berth remains for either Seattle Reign, North Carolina Courage or Denver Summit.

McGlynn watched the final moments with several of her Royals (14-5-10, 47 points) teammates in the 100 Lions’ Club under the stadium, where head coach Jimmy Coenraets said some 27 coaches gathered around a television and yelled instructions to the Thorns players, coaches and staff over 700 miles away.

“See? It’s not that easy,” he joked, with a laugh.

The Royals (14-5-10, 47 points) will travel to league-leading Gotham FC in the regular-season finale. A win or tie can go a long way toward earning a home playoff game.

But the hardest part is over. After 5 1/2 seasons in the NWSL split over two distinct generations and even more groups of owners, Utah was bound for the postseason.

They aren’t done yet — at least, they don’t want to be. But Coenraets admitted he was able to breathe a deep sigh of relief once the full-time whistle was blown in Portland.

So were a lot of others in Salt Lake City — players, coaches, fans and members of the staff, several of whom grew up in Utah’s capital city.

“I think this club means a lot to a lot of people,” Coenraets said.

“I don’t think it was on anyone’s bingo card,” he added. “There were people picking us last or second-to-last in the league … Clinching today is exactly what you want.”

Utah had chances, four of them on frame even against the Reign (13-5-11, 44 points). There were other frustrations from the night, including a certain uncalled hair pull by a certain retiring legend for which Royals fans will feel hard done.

But mostly, there were missed opportunities as the Royals’ goal-less skid stretched beyond 200 minutes at home through the regular-season finale.

The Royals entered Friday night’s match against Seattle — led by former Utah manager Laura Harvey — with a shot at history: win, and the Utah side would clinch an NWSL playoff berth for the first time in the team’s staggered history dating back to the 2018 season (and includes the past three seasons since returning from NWSL hiatus in 2024).

A draw would also suffice, but the Utah side would need some help from friends in the Pacific Northwest.

Done, and done.

Less than an hour after the final whistle — following Portland’s 1-0 win over North Carolina, to be exact, Utah got its wish: For the first time in franchise history, the Royals were postseason-bound.

“We wanted to clinch, and we knew this was an opportunity to clinch,” said Courtney Brown, the Utah native who started in midfield amid the continued absence of talisman Mina Tanaka. “I think that was feeding our energy.

“We really wanted to do that, and it’s been a goal of the club’s all season,” she added. “We definitely felt support from the supporters feeding into it, too. It was awesome.”

The team knew what was at stake. Coenraets didn’t bring it up before the game; truth is, he didn’t have to.

But the Reign were fighting for their playoff lives, too. They didn’t make it easy, either; not at all.

Utah out-shot the visitors 7-3 in the first half, including the only two shots on target. But Claudia Dickey made an unreal save on Ana Tejada’s rip in the 42nd minute, and the the Reign held firm despite just a single shot on target to keep alive their own postseason hopes.

The Royals will kick off NWSL Decision Day next Sunday, Nov. 1 at 1 p.m. MT. Gotham FC (16-7-5, 55 points) may need a result in that one, pending the outcome of Sunday’s match against postseason-eliminated Orlando.

In other words, Utah has clinched — but still has plenty for which to play.

“I love those kinds of games,” Coenraets said.

HERRIMAN — After Olympus and Brighton split the regular-season girls soccer series with a 2-1 win apiece, the most obvious assumption was that the rubber match would feature a similarly tight, one-goal game.

Obvious assumptions proved wrong Friday afternoon.

Ariana Milkota notched a brace to help Brighton pull past Region 6 rival Olympus, 4-1 to secure the Bengals’ first state championship since 2013 at Zions Bank Stadium.

Jackie Scott and Saige Thurgood also scored for the Bengals (16-4) in their seventh championship in program history.

Scott gave Brighton the early lead with a header in the 18th minute. Mila Guymon equalized just under 10 minutes later for the Titans (15-4).

But the Bengals took control for good with a brace from Milkota, who notched her second goal midway through the second half and never looked back.

Thurgood, the senior Utah Valley commit, put the cherry on top with a 65th-minute free kick that kissed the far corner from close to 30 yards out.

HERRIMAN — Samantha Brown often describes herself as a basketball player, a 6-foot-1 sophomore combo guard with a 4.0 GPA who is already being recruited by Weber State who averaged 10.9 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 2.1 steals and 1.3 blocks per game as a freshman while already drawing interest from Division I programs like Weber State and Utah Tech.

She’s dedicated enough that she posts on Instagram under “sambrownbasketball.”

But on Friday afternoon at Zions Bank Stadium, she may have also been the best thing to happen to Ridgeline’s girls soccer program in six years.

Brown scored the lone goal of the match midway through the second half to help Ridgeline secure its second state title with a 1-0 win over Crimson Cliffs in the 4A championship game at Zions Bank Stadium.

Ridgeline coach Richard Alexander isn’t sure how much longer Brown will stay with his program. But on Friday afternoon, he was glad to have her.

“What an athlete. What an athlete,” Alexander said. “It’s incredible to have a two-sport athlete like that.

“It’s not just her soccer knowledge, but her basketball IQ that plays into it. We love Sam, and we’re really hoping she comes back next season; I know she really wants to dedicate her time to basketball going forward. But I’m really hoping forward she will come back and continue this run that we’re on.”

After a scoreless first half, Brown found the back of the net in the 50th minute to give Ridgeline an edge.

The sophomore took a pass from Melanie Smith, took one touch, and lofted a ball that sailed underneath the crossbar to give the Riverhawks all the lead that goalkeeper Yadinen Parker all the separation required.

HERRIMAN — For years, Lone Peak girls’ soccer rode explosive goal scorers, elite playmakers and a potent offense to state championships (or the cusp of it).

On Friday morning, the Knights rode an elite defense.

Scotlyn Schlosser collected her third consecutive shutout in goal to help Lone Peak pull past Davis, 3-0 to win the Knights’ third 6A championship in four years at Zions Bank Stadium.

Katherine Mason opened the scoring in the 25th minute, taking a touch around 30 yards from goal before ripping a shot inside the far post to give the Knights a 1-0 advantage.

Kami McMurtey doubled the advantage midway through the second half, taking a pass from midfield and blitzing the back line to put one away around the 60th minute for Lone Peak.

With Davis pushing high to pull back into the match, Sadie Stratton capped the scoring with an unassisted rip late to seal the Knights’ fourth championship and third in the last four years.

HERRIMAN — There have been three guarantees over the past eight years in life as well as in Utah high school soccer: death, taxes, and Ogden High girls soccer playing for a championship.

The Tigers did it again Thursday.

Alonda Ayala scored the match-winner in the 74th minute as Ogden fended off Morgan, 2-1 in a 3A girls soccer state semifinal at Zions Bank Stadium to advance to the championship match for the eighth straight season.

The Tigers (14-6) have made a final every year since winning the 4A title in 2019, a run that includes four championships including last year’s 5-1 win over Manti.

Ogden opened the scoring early, when Gwenith Aardema took a pass from Bryleigh Thomas en route to the Tigers’ 1-0 halftime lead.

But Monea Whimpey equalized int he 44th minute for Morgan, prompting a #TarpsOff celebration from the Trojan faithful on the front row of the stormy Zions Bank Stadium.

Ayala put Ogden back in front in the 75th minute, whipping in a shot from the edge of the penalty area that nicked over the goal line to send the Tigers back to the title round Saturday at 11 a.m. MT at Zions Bank Stadium.

Manti 4, Richfield 0

The top-seeded Templars kept up their end of the rematch, running through Richfield en route to a 4-0 win in the early semifinal.

Madelyn Bridges scored two goals and added an assist for Manti (19-1), which got a goal and an assist from McKinzee Chidester.

Ella Thompson added a goal, and Haddie Rasmussen provided an assist as Averie Jo Robbins extended the Templars’ winning streak against Richfield (16-5) to 14 games.

2A semifinals: First-half burst leads Waterford past American Heritage, into final against Maeser Prep

Lexee Hasebi scored two goals and provided as an assist as Waterford scored four first-half goals in a little over four minutes to cruise by American Heritage, 6-0 in a rain-soaked semifinal.

Evan Mackey also scored twice for the Ravens (14-5), who got goals from Savvy Williams and Farrah Lu and added an assist from Hasebi’s younger sister Berklee to advance to the 2A state final for the third straight year.

It will be a rematch of the regular-season match that Maeser Prep won 1-0 in extra time back on Sept. 29.

Maeser Prep 5, American Leadership 0

Ellery Garner and Cami Simmons scored two goals apiece as the Lions roared past the Eagles to earn a spot in the championship game for the first time since 2015.

Norah Johnson also scored for top-seeded Maeser (18-2), which got assists from Tess Jorgensen and Ruby Dunn in the win.

The Lions and Ravens will face each other in Saturday’s 2A championship at 2 p.m. MT at Zions Bank Stadium.

OREM, Utah — Since conference play began in Utah Valley’s first season in the Big West, Sadie Beardall hasn’t been able to stop scoring.

The trend continued Wednesday night.

Beardall had two goals and two assists as the Wolverines stayed unbeaten in Big West play with a 6-1 win over Sacramento State in front of an announced crowd of 1,283 fans at UCCU Stadium.

The senior scored her ninth and 10th goals of the season for Utah Valley (10-4-3, 6-0-2 Big West) with four goals in three-straight matches. Beardall’s 10 goals rank her among the top-30 in the country in total goals after Wednesday night, and just two goals behind Long Beach State’s Cherrie Cox for the most in the Big West.

With the win, Utah Valley clinched a spot in the six-team Big West Conference tournament, with the top two seeds receiving a first-round bye in the tournament scheduled to run from Nov. 4 through Nov. 14.

But the secret to the Wolverines, who won their fourth consecutive match, isn’t just Beardall, a pure finisher in the air as well as her right foot. It’s from the service she receives.

On Wednesday night, she got all of it, rising up to meet Sam Curtis’ corner kick with her forehead in the seventh minute to open the scoring and adding another off a through-ball from Tylie Miller, who had two assists.

“All of us have just been clicking; we know how to find each other, sometimes by eye contact,” Beardall said. “It doesn’t have to be calling for the ball anymore.

“Nixan Jackson really knows how to find those balls. I think all of us do; we just need to find each other’s feet, and we keep having each others’ backs.”

Jackson also had a goal and an assists on 10 shots for Utah Valley, including four of the Wolverines’ 10 shots on target. In all, the hosts out-shot Sacramento State 28-4 and got goals from Mia Owens and Josie Clawson, while Addie Olson and Kate Booth also provided an assist for a team that benefitted from an own goal.

Beardall served up a perfect pass for a goal in the 30th minute, taking a throw-in from Jackson to the end line before crossing to an open Clawson in the middle of the penalty box for the finish.

The senior from South Ogden with a fifth year available notched her second goal in the 49th minute, finishing a pass from Miller six minutes before Jackson stretched the advantage to 4-0 with a right-footed shot after Miller forced a turnover.

After an own goal, Beardall helped push the lead to 6-0 finding Owens for a left-footed goal in the 74th minute.

“I’m really proud of my girls,” Beardall said. “They really helped me get those two goals, and I think we just stuck our foot on the gas. From the opening whistle, it was good to get on the board early, too.”

Marely Velazquez Varela pulled one back a minute later for Sacramento State (5-6-5, 1-4-3 Big West) to prevent the shutout.

The Wolverines hit the road again to face UC Santa Barbara on Saturday. The Gauchos (8-2-6, 3-1-3 Big West) lost their first match in conference play Wednesday night, 2-0 to Cal Poly and fell 8 points behind the league-leading Wolverines.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. MT on ESPN+.

HERRIMAN, Utah — Death, taxes and Lone Peak girls soccer playing for a 6A state championship.

The Knights got goals from three different scorers, and Scottlyn Schlosser notched her sixth shutout of the year to pull past rival American Fork, 3-0 Monday afternoon at Zions Bank Stadium.

With the win, Lone Peak (17-3) advanced to the championship match for the fourth straight year that includes titles in 2023 and 2024.

“It’s great. You obviously can never complain when you get to the finals,” said Lone Peak coach Shantel Jolley, whose team lost 2-0 to Syracuse in last the 2025 6A championship. “But I think we’ve got something different to prove this year. It’s definitely not a revenge game; we just want to prove that we can get one this year as opposed to ‘redeeming’ ourselves.

“We’re excited to be back.”

The top-seeded Knights started fast, about 20 seconds after kickoff when Sami Schiffman found Macie Leavitt for a goal that gave the Knights a lead they would never relinquish.

Nya Piercy doubled the lead just before halftime, and Kami McMurtey stretched the advantage to 3-0 midway through the second half to account for the gamewinner.

The Knights cruised to a 15th consecutive win over their Region 3 rivals, a streak that dates back to a 3-1 loss in September 2020. Lone Peak won both regular-season meetings via shutout by an aggregate score of 7-0.

With the win, Lone Peak advance to Friday’s 6A championship against Davis.

Maudsley, Davis dart past Phoenix for championship berth

At Zions Bank Stadium, Samantha Maudsley had a goal and an assist, including the second-half matchwinner, as the second-seeded Darts advance to the 6A championship match for the second time in three years with a 3-2 win over Region 1 rival Farmington.

Kate Willard led Davis (15-4) with two goals. But the Darts trailed early before Maudsley led the comeback.

Farmington struck first through Oaklee Stanford to put the third-seeded Phoenix in front.

But Willard topped the 20-goal mark on the season with a first-half brace less than two minutes apart. The Weber State commit finished a crossed from Maudsley to equalize in the 26th minute, and then pushed the Darts in front moments after the restart with a cool finish from Marley Francis.

The Phoenix still weren’t done.

Addy Webb drew Farmington level with a 48th-minute screamer as the two sides played to a 2-2 halftime stalemate.

But Maudsley broke through midway through the second half, finishing off a cross into the box from Avery Johnson in the 63rd minute of play to lift Davis back into the title game against the perennial contender Knights.

Kickoff is scheduled for 10 a.m. MT Friday at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman.

SANDY, Utah — The Utah Royals will have to wait another week before clinching their first playoff appearance in franchise history after falling 2-0 to Kansas City Current on Saturday.

Current forward Haley Hopkins opened the scoring in the 21st minute with a headed effort off a corner kick that appeared to come off her hand. Hopkins earned a brace to seal the win for Kansas City in second-half stoppage time, slotting home the cutback pass from Temwa Chawinga.

But while the Royals left America First Field without a goal, they weren’t without their chances.

Brecken Mozingo nearly found the first goal of the game early on after some chaos within the Kansas City penalty area, and CeCe Delzer almost came close to finding an equalizer with a near-perfect header that ended wide of the post in the second half.

Royals defender Kate Del Fava said the team felt they were just inches off in the final third and were punished for it by Kansas City.

“I think if you take away the goals, we’re the better team. But, unfortunately, that’s what counts, especially at this point of the season,” said Del Fava. “Teams that finish and can execute are the teams that are going to end up winning a championship, and we want that to be us.”

Utah head coach Jimmy Coenraets said the team was only together for one full day between the international break and Saturday’s match. But even with only one day to share the game plan, he felt the team executed the plan well.

“I think we showed up as the Royals today; we almost got a good result against a team that is good. A team that has been doing well and has scored eight goals — nine goals in the previous two games? — I think we did well, and we don’t have to be afraid of anything or anyone. It’s just being us,” said Coenraets.

With the result and other results around the league, the Royals drop to 6th in the NWSL (14-4-10), six points clear of the playoff line.

The Utah Royals will fight for another chance to clinch a playoff berth in their final regular-season home match against Seattle Reign FC on Friday, Oct. 23, at America First Field.

PROVO — Stop us if you’ve heard this before: a top-25 program at BYU hosted a top-10 opponent this weekend with a chance to make a statement midway.

One day before the eighth-ranked Cougars’ football team hosted No. 2 Notre Dame, the BYU women’s soccer team made a statement of its own.

Mattyn Summers-Oviatt tallied her first career brace as BYU stunned No. 8 Texas Tech, 3-2 in front of an announced crowd of 3,329 fans at South Field.

Mia Goettsche added a goal for the 22nd-ranked Cougars, who improved to 9-3-2 with a 5-1-1 record in Big 12 play and an unbeaten 7-0-1 mark at home in head coach Jennifer Rockwood’s final season at the helm of the program.

The finishing was one thing. But the service from the likes of Mika Krommenhoek, Presley Freeman, Emma Hamberlin and freshman Sydney Snow was on another level.

“We’ve been working a lot on service the last three weeks, so it’s exciting to see us put it together,” Rockwood said. “We’ve struggling scoring goals this year … Brilliant goals by Mattyn; I’m so excited for here. Goettsche got an important goal for us, too, to help us change the momentum and let us regroup.”

With apologies (perhaps) to then-No. 9 UCLA in the opening match of the season, this may have been the biggest win of the campaign (so far).

The win pushes BYU into a four-way tie for first in the Big 12 with Texas Tech’s first loss of the season, along with Baylor and Kansas at 5-1-1 apiece with four games left in the regular season.

“These last 3-4 weeks, I feel like we’ve gotten better with each game,” Rockwood said. “Even in the loss to West Virginia, we played probably our best 45 minutes and had one of our best games against a really good team.

“These girls deserve to have a little swag and a little confidence, because we’re playing some really good soccer,” added Rockwood, who admitted her team’s goal was to win the Big 12 regular season. “We knew that the goals would eventually come, and fortunately they came tonight against a really good Texas Tech team who has had a really good season so far … We’ll probably see them again, hopefully, in the tournament.”

Texas Tech (9-1-4, 5-1-1 Big 12) were riding high, allowing just one goal during a four-match win streak since opening league play with a 2-2 draw at then-No. 25 UCF. The Cougars, meanwhile, returned from a two-match road trip at No. 16 West Virginia and Cincinnati with a split that included a 2-0 loss to the Mountaineers.

But on the same night WVU was stunned 1-0 by UCF, the Cougars went toe-to-toe with the league leaders, putting up 13 shots to Tech’s 14, five shots on target to the Red Raiders’ six, and rallying from a 1-0 deficit to take a 2-1 halftime lead and never giving back the advantage.

The stage was set with 1,000 students camped out on the set of ESPN’s College GameDay: a top-10 opponent at South Field with BYU back in the coaches’ top 25 at No. 22.

Even former BYU defender Abbi Sine knew it, as she made her 11th start in 14 appearances for the Red Raiders.

But 46 seconds in, disaster struck — or opportunity, for the Red Raiders.

BYU goalkeeper Paiton Collins mishandled a backward pass as Avery Frischknecht sought to play out of Texas Tech’s press. Sensing a half-step of an opening, Taylor Zdrojewski poked the ball away from Collins and slid in a goal from the middle of the penalty box to give the Red Raiders a 1-0 advantage in the first minute.

But Emma Hamberlin didn’t take long to equalize, taking a pass from Mika Krommenhoek and finding Goettsche off the end line for a one-touch finish that pulled the hosts even in the 17th minute.

But the Cougars matched the Red Raiders after the rough start. Summers-Oviatt gave the hosts a lead in the 44th minute, flying in for a header to meet freshman Sydney Snow’s cross set up by fellow Georgia native Presley Freeman playing a ball toward the corner flag en route to Summers-Oviatt’s third goal of the season.

Summers-Oviatt made it 3-1 in the 57th minute, polishing off a double after a brilliant through ball from Krommenhoek led the senior from Saratoga Springs to her first career brace.

But the Red Raiders weren’t done.

Zdrojewski pulled back another in the 71st minute, bagging her brace ahead of the final 20 that stood on video review. After Collins saved an initial shot, the senior from Celina, Texas, followed up for her 10th goal of the year to pull the visitors within one.

But Collins made four saves, and Frischknecht took a ball at full force to the stomach following a free kick at the edge of the penalty area to preserve the one-goal advantage in the 84th minute and hand the Red Raiders their first loss of conference play.

The Cougars hit the road again for back-to-back road matches beginning Thursday at Kansas (5 p.m. MT, ESPN+) and Monday, Oct. 26 at Iowa State (5 p.m. MT, ESPN+).

They’ll return home Friday, Oct. 30 to host in-state rival Utah (7:30 p.m. MT, ESPN+) and wrap up the regular season Nov. 5 on South Field against Arizona State.

SANDY, Utah — Luc de Fougerolles was having about as perfect of a home debut as any Real Salt Lake fan could’ve asked.

Until he couldn’t finish the match.

De Fougerolles scored his first goal in an RSL kit, but San Jose came back on Jack Jasinski’s stoppage-time equalizer to finish with a 1-1 tie Wednesday night at America First Field.

The draw keeps Salt Lake (9-6-14) five points beyond the playoff line with 33 points and five matches left in the regular season as San Jose (13-8-8, 47 points) stretched its unbeaten streak to eight-straight.

“It was such an unfortunate bad stroke of luck,” RSL manager Pablo Mastroeni said, “because I thought the guys were so good tonight. They were excellent.”

Making the first start of his RSL career after assisting on Saba Lobjnadize’s goal during Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Philadelphia, de Fougerolles nearly bagged a goal after his shot from Saba Lobjanidze’s cross in the 11th minute caromed off the right post.

San Jose out-shot the the hosts 9-5 in the first half. But neither side produced a shot on target until Morgan Guilavogui’s right-footed attempt from distance was saved in the 43rd minute.

Salt Lake was compact, organized, and held its defensive shape in only allowing

But the subs brought new life to Wednesday’s midweek less-than-friendly match between the two Western Conference rivals.

Moments after Zach Booth, Ariath Piol and Aiden Hezarkhani came on around the hour mark, de Fougerroles took a pass from Juan Manuel Sanabria following a set piece on the right side of the box, and one-timed his first goal in an RSL jersey to give the hosts the lead in the 79th minute.

“The guys coming into the game, I thought, changed the game,” Mastroeni said. “And that’s now three games in a row … where those guys did a fantastic job.”

But it was a near-perfect debut for de Fougerolles — until the Canadian international born and raised in London dropped to the turf grabbing his leg after the stellar finish.

De Fougerolles came off and was immediately treated with electrolytes and salt, though Mastroeni said the injury “doesn’t look good.”

“I don’t want to overreact int his moment,” he added. “But he needed help getting to the locker room.”

Unfortunate, too, because the center back seemed to be an answer to so much of what has ailed Real Salt Lake since Justen Glad went down with an adductor injury earlier this season.

The 21-year-old World Cup center back was arguably RSL’s best player on the night — FotMob rated him as such, at least — in his 82 minutes, scoring a goal on 0.13 xG with 10 defensive contributions to keep the clean sheet until his disappointing exit.

But he wasn’t alone. Noel Caliskan found more of the ball in front of de Fougerolles, and JuanMa Sanabria was as dangerous as he’s ever been. The list could go one.

But Mastroeni agreed: de Fougerolles’ impact has been exactly what his club has needed.

“What he’s brought to the team in such a short time has been transformational,” he said. “This is the player that we’ve been starving for.”

DeAndre Yedlin replaced him for the final 10 minutes of regulation, as RSL continued to hold San Jose without a goal. The former World Cup international fared well, too.

But in the fourth minute of five minutes of stoppage time, Jasinski finished inside the far post to help the visitors collect a point from the road trip.

Real Salt Lake hits the road Saturday to face Sporting Kansas City (6:30 p.m. MT, Apple TV) before returning home Oct. 24 to host St. Louis City SC.

BYU women’s soccer bounced back in a key road spot Monday evening to keep pace with the top teams in the Big 12 table.

Bella Woods scored the only goal of the match Monday as No. 20 BYU bounced back with a 1-0 win over Cincinnati at Gettler Stadium in southwestern Ohio.

Paiton Collins made four saves to preserve the shutout in her first 90-minute start of the season, and also pulled down a loose ball in her box in the closing seconds as the Cougars improved to 8-3-2 and 4-1-1 in Big 12 play following their first conference loss of the year.

That keeps BYU in a four-way tie for second place in the conference, just 3 points behind league-leading Texas Tech (9-0-4, 5-0-1 Big 12).

Four days after out-shooting No. 16 West Virginia in a 2-0 loss, the 20th-ranked Cougars threw caution to the wind with an aggressive attack. The visitors put six of their 15 shots on frame, and forced eight corner kicks while playing to a scoreless first half.

Woods opened the scoring in the 52nd minute with a direct free kick that leaped from her right foot to the corner to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.

It’s the second goal in three matches for Woods, the Utah transfer from Alta High who was an attacking player growing up before gradually transitioning toward defense and starting 13-straight matches at center back since transferring to BYU.

“I’ve been practicing bending it around the wall for a while,” Woods said after the match. “As soon as I saw the keeper go to that post, I knew I had an opening for the shot.”

BYU returns home Friday night to host No. 12 Texas Tech. Kickoff from South Field is scheduled for 7 p.m. MT on ESPN+ before a two-match road trip at Kansas and Iowa State.

OGDEN, Utah — Lily Blum and Lauren Butorac made sure Weber State’s stay atop the Big Sky Conference table was more than a one-match-wonder Sunday afternoon.

Blum scored the go-ahead in the second half, and Butorac stopped a late penalty kick to help the Wildcats stay unbeaten in conference play with a 1-0 win over in-state rival Southern Utah.

The win keeps Weber State (7-5-2) unbeaten in Big Sky play with a 3-0-1 record, including back-to-back home shutouts against Utah Tech and SUU.

The Wildcats out-shot the visiting Thunderbirds (4-7-2, 1-2-1 Big Sky) 13-6 and held SUU to just two shots on target.

But the hosts didn’t break through until the middle of the second half, when Blum one-timed a pass from former Lehi High standout Isabelle Dahl.

The former Olympus High star took a pass from Dahl in the 72nd minute, spun toward goal, and finished a left-footed shot past SUU goalkeeper Tatum Trout, who made six saves on the day.

Butorac made the goal stand up in the 84th minute, punching a penalty kick attempt from SUU’s Gracen Blieschke into the post to keep the third-straight win and second-straight shutout after Thursday’s 5-0 win over Utah Tech.

The Wildcats open a two-match road trip Thursday at Portland State and Montana before returning home Oct. 29 to host Northern Colorado.

Southern Utah returns home Thursday to host Northern Arizona. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. MT in Cedar City.

Elsewhere in the Big Sky …

Jocelyn Wright had two goals and an assist as Utah Tech bounced back with a 5-0 win over Idaho State in Pocatello, Idaho.

Utah Tech hosts Northern Colorado on Thursday before playing host to Northern Arizona three days later in St. George.

Aggies shut out Boise State to keep hold of Pac-12 lead

Rachel Reitz’s first-half penalty kick was the difference as No. 17 Utah State held off Boise State, 1-0 to improve to 4-0 in Pac-12 play Sunday at Boas Soccer Complex in Boise, Idaho.

Ivy Nystrom made two saves to earn the shutout for Utah State (11-2-2), who snapped the nation’s longest winning streak and the Broncos’ longest home unbeaten streak in program history at 14 games.

The win keeps the Aggies atop the Pac-12 table, just 3 points ahead of the Broncos (11-2-1, 3-1 Pac-12) before returning to Chuck and Gloria Bell Field next Saturday, Oct. 17 against Fresno State.

Utes drop third-straight result, 2-0 at No. 17 West Virginia

Maya Leoni had a goal and an assist as No. 17 West Virginia jumped out to a 2-0 lead and held off the University of Utah, 2-1 Sunday morning in Morgantown.

OREM, Utah — Utah Valley soccer is fitting in well in its new confines, at least on the soccer pitch.

The Wolverines scored three second-half goals to pull past Sacramento State, 3-0 in Saturday night’s return to UCCU Stadium to keep pace at the top of the Big West.

Oliver Watts had a goal and an assist, and Noah Pogue and Jose Luis Martin Montealegre also scored for the Wolverines, who improved to 7-1-2 with a 3-1 record in league play.

“We used all of our depth to get that result,” said UVU head coach Michael Chesler, whose team out-shot the Hornets 18-7 with seven shots on goal but was tied 0-0 at halftime. “We didn’t start great. The subs came on — we actually call them game-changers — and they changed the game. They got us the result, then the starters came back on and finished it for us, so I couldn’t be more proud.”

Pogue opened the scoring in the 58th minute, when the fifth-year senior from Corner Canyon High rose way up to meet Bismark Ayamba’s header to break the ice.

Watts doubled the lead in the 80th minute, and the freshman added his fourth goal contribution in four games seven minutes later after feeding Montealegre for a curler from the right side of the 18-yard box.

The win gives Utah Valley a 2-point lead on UC Irvine (6-5-2, 2-1-1 Big West) atop the table of the seven-team league.

Meanwhile, in San Luis Obispo …

The Wolverines’ men’s program wasn’t the only winner Saturday night.

Nixan Jackson had a goal and an assist, and Kate Booth secured points for the second-straight match to lift Utah Valley women’s soccer to a 2-1 win over Cal Poly at Spanos Stadium.

Jackson broke the seal with a left-footed strike from 25 yards away int he 36th minute for UVU (7-4-3, 3-0-2 Big West), then found Booth with a cross three minutes later to double the advantage in the 39th minute.

Kammy MacLennan pulled one back for the Mustangs (5-5-3, 2-2-1 Big West), but Madeleine Boucher made five saves to collect the win in goal for the Wolverines to keep pace with Cal State Fullerton atop the conference.

Both the men’s and women’s soccer teams will host a doubleheader Saturday at UCCU Stadium. The Women’s team will open against UC Riverside at 5 p.m. MT, followed by the men’s team at 7:30 p.m. against CSU Northridge.

CHESTER, Pa. — The injury list is getting shorter for Real Salt Lake, if that’s any consolation from the club’s latest setback.

Saba Lobjanidze notched his sixth goal contribution in 13 matches this season before RSL fell to the Philadelphia Union, 2-1 Saturday evening at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania.

RSL manager Pablo Mastroeni kept the same starting lineup from the club’s 3-0 win over New England that snapped a club-record 13 match MLS winless skid.

But the dynamic of the lineup was completely different. Zach Booth (hamstring) and Ariath Piol (Achilles) both returned to the bench after lengthy injury layoffs, including Piol since the Australian international suffered an Achilles tear after scoring the game-winning goal Feb. 28 at home.

The club also returned several internationals from their respective camps during the September-October window, notably Juan Manuel Sanabria (Uruguay), Luc de Fougerolles (Canada), Saba Lobjanidze (Georgia), and U.S. youth internationals Colin Guske and Luca Moisa.

From as many as 13 absences two weeks ago, the club was down to just five players on the unavailable list — a group that includes talisman winger Diego Luna, who is out for the season following knee surgery.

Still, Philadelphia out-shot Salt Lake 6-2 in the first half, but only put two shots on target after clinching 32 of a possible 36 points from 12 matches since returning from the FIFA men’s World Cup break in July to surge up the Eastern Conference table.

One of those came off the right boot of Bruno Damiani, who struck from the center of the penalty area off a pass from Frankie Westfield to give the Union a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute.

Sanabria entered as a substitute to start the second half, and de Fougerolles joined him in making his RSL debut — becoming the 245th player all-time in Salt Lake’s 22-year history.

But Milan Iloski, the former RSL Homegrown with 16 goals and six assists in a previous 27 appearances for the Union (12-10-6, 42 points) doubled the hosts’ advantage in the 81st minute, finishing a shot from close range from Cavan Sullivan that was ruled a goal following a lengthy VAR review.

Lobjanidze pulled one back in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time, taking a well-played through ball from de Fougerolles following a corner kick for his third goal in his last six available appearances for Real Salt Lake.

With the setup, de Fougerolles — a Canadian international from London on loan with Salt Lake from England’s Fulham FC — became the ninth player in club history to record an assist in his debut, and the 15th with a goal contribution in his first appearance.

But Philadelphia head on to hand RSL its 10th road loss of the year dating back to March 7 at Atlanta and falling to 5-2-6 all-time against the Union at Subaru Park.

Salt Lake returns home Wednesday to host the San Jose Earthquakes. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. MT at America First Field before the club heads to Sporting Kansas City for a third match in eight days Saturday (6:30 p.m. MT, Apple TV).
