That changed Thursday night.

Utah State are the undisputed (for now, at least) Queens of the Beehive State after a 4-0 rout of No. 13 BYU.

The Aggies didn’t just beat their in-state rivals; they controlled Thursday night’s match in front of a program-record crowd of 3,181 in Logan, out-shooting the Cougars 22-9 and holding the visitors to just two shots on target.

Here’s how the rest of the state falls in behind, according to our extremely scientific (read: not at all) formula that subjectively compares programs in the same state:

1. Utah State (5-2-1)

The Aggies’ win over BYU was their fourth over an in-state opponent, and adds to 1-0 victories over Utah and Utah Valley and an 8-1 thrashing of Utah Tech in Logan.

Three of the four victories have come at home, and Utah State won’t play Weber State or Southern Utah this year.

That means Thursday night’s victory clinches a season sweep of in-state competition for the second time in the past three seasons.

2. BYU (4-2-1)

The Cougars have plenty of questions after Thursday’s humbling loss, and will take a two-match winless skid into the Big 12 opener next Friday, Sept. 18 at Arizona.

Hardly prolific (though adequate) before, BYU’s offense has ground to a halt since All-American forward Ellie Walbruch’s torn ACL suffered Sept. 3 in a 2-1 win over Colorado State.

But perhaps just as questionable is the strange goalkeeper battle between former starter Paiton Collins and last year’s NCAA Tournament hero Chelsea Peterson since the home opener Aug. 22 against USC.

3. Utah Valley (3-2-1)

Formerly questionable in the attack, the Wolverines are riding a three-match winning streak after packing their scoring boots in a pair of shutout wins over Washington State and New Mexico State at the OUTRIGGER No Ka Oi in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Utah Valley returns to the mainland Saturday night, hosting San Diego State at 7 p.m. MT at UCCU Stadium. Did the Wolverines bring their offensive punch back?

4. Utah Tech (4-4-1)

The Trailblazers added to a historic 2-1 win over Utah with a 1-0 victory over Colorado State — but surrounded it with an 8-1 thrashing at Utah State and a 4-2 loss to CSU Northridge in St. George on Thursday night.

Head coach Lexi Brown’s group has one more nonconference tilt to tweak Thursday at New Mexico before Big Sky play begins Oct. 1 against Portland State.

5. Utah (2-3-2)

Reese Clem’s penalty kick in Corvallis helped the Utes stop a three-game losing skid with a 1-1 draw at Oregon State.

Utah closes nonconference play Saturday at Long Beach State before Big 12 fun begins next Friday, Sept. 18 at Arizona State.

6. Weber State (3-3-1)

Lily Blum scored twice in the Wildcats’ 3-2 home loss to South Dakota State, their second loss in three matches Thursday night.

Can Weber State course correct Sunday against UC Santa Barbara, or will nonconference finales at Utah Valley and home to Colorado State say more about the Big Sky favorites ahead of the conference opener Oct. 1 at Idaho?

7. Southern Utah (3-4)

The Thunderbirds halted a three-game losing spell with an 18-0 victory over Justice College, a non-Division I, non-NCAA program from Chandler, Arizona.

Can SUU keep the good vibes going when Northridge comes to town Sunday in the nonconference home finale? Big Sky play starts Oct. 1 against Montana, with only a road trip to Boise State in between.

SANDY, Utah — Utah Royals FC conceded a late match-winner Friday night in a 2-1 loss to NWSL newcomers Boston Legacy FC.

Ana Tejada was suspended from the match due to yellow-card accumulation for Utah (12-8-3, 39 points), which saw Mina Tanaka record her 50th appearance with Royalty and Kate Del Fava surpass 7,200 consecutive minutes played for the second-longest streak in league history behind Kaleigh Kurtz’s active streak.

Aissata Traoré struck first for Boston, giving the Legacy a 1-0 lead with a rebound conversion in the 11th minute.

Kiana Palacios equalized less than six minutes later, running on to the end of Mandy McGlynn’s boot from the top of her penalty box before finishing past three defenders with an angled right-footed shot en route to the 1-1 halftime draw.

But Aleigh Gambone found the winner in the 86th minute, lifting Boston (6-12-5, 23 points) to its first win in six matches.

ST. GEORGE — Last week was a really good week to be Lexi Brown.

The fourth-year Utah Tech head coach led the Trailblazers to their first Division I win of the year on Thursday in Riverside, California, and turned around three nights later for arguably the biggest win in program history.

That was Sunday night, when Jocelyn Wright scored the match-winner to lift Utah Tech to a 2-1 win over the University of Utah — the Trailblazers’ first victory over a power conference opponent since jumping to Division I in 2020.

“It’s great to come out of a weekend 2-0, no matter what,” Brown said during her weekly coaches’ show on Utah Tech’s Trailblazer SportsVision YouTube channel. “But the way we did it against an in-state rival and a power-four opponent was very divining for us.

“I told the team right after in the huddle, that was my favorite win of my career; no question,” she later told Utah Tech’s Rod Zundel. “It was both the magnitude of what it meant, and also the way they played — how gritty and tough they were … Now for us, it’s about how can we turn one big win into two big wins as we play at Utah State on Thursday.”

It’s been a tough few weeks for the Trailblazers, who opened the season 1-2-1 with only a non-D1 win over Westminster that concluded with a 3-0 loss to previously winless Portland.

Additionally, Utah Tech lost two starters to injury and Lacy Fox — the fifth-year forward from Lone Peak who was originally granted an extra season of eligibility under the NCAA’s new age-based eligibility model — was then declared ineligible by the courts.

But the team stuck together — and came together last week with a pair of key wins, first 1-0 over UC Riverside and then the 2-1 victory over the Utes at home.

“Obviously starting off the season like that was a little bit rough,” said Wright, last year’s All-WAC freshman of the year from Herriman who was earned preseason All-Big Sky honors as a sophomore. “It’s easy to get frustrated and pick at the negative. But I think all the girls are competitive, everybody cares, and it shows in games and in practice where nobody else sees it.

“We all know what we want, and we do it for each other.”

Real Salt Lake is adding to the attack as the summer transfer window nears a closure.

The day before the summer deadline when all paperwork must be filed by Major League Soccer, RSL announced the addition of Chicago Fire striker Jason Shokalook on a permanent transfer and brought home former RSL Academy product and Utah native Tayor Booth on loan from Dutch Eredivisie side FC Twente.

The two are different transactions, but related in staying with the ethos of the club. First, there’s Shokalook.

The 23-year-old forward scored 20 goals in 22 appearances with Chicago Fire II a year ago to earn MLS NEXT Pro golden-boot honors prior to earning a first-team contract with the Fire for the 2026 campaign, with club options for 2027 and 2028.

The former 2024 MLS Superdraft pick out of Akron had one assist in nine appearances off the bench for Chicago. But he found himself stuck behind league-leading scorer Hugo Cuypers before his move to Liga MX side Monterrey.

Then, Shokalook’s minutes declined even further when the Fire brought in 38-year-old Polish star Robert Lewandowski on a Designated Player contract.

A young striker with a knack for scoring looking to find minutes and jump start his career? Shokalook certainly fits the profile of Real Salt Lake, at a price of up to $200,000 in general allocation money with an additional $50,000 in GAM earmarked if Shokalook meets certain performance incentives.

“It’s a position where I think we need reinforcements,” RSL manager Pablo Mastroeni said of the striker with a similar build as rookie standout Sergi Solans. “Serg is playing the longest season of his career, and the last two games he’s played 90. We want to make sure we have enough reinforcements to really attack the last 12-13 games the right way.

“Jason’s a young player who has a lot of upside, but he also has the right mentality and profile of the striker,” Mastroeni added. “His off-ball movements are really good; he’s a true No. 9, not a hybrid … and he’s a player who I think has a high ceiling.”

Now Shokalook, who was on the ground training as early as Tuesday with Real Salt Lake, will look to find a role on the Wasatch Front — and alongside another addition who is familiar to the state.

Taylor Booth is returning to Utah after eight years abroad where the Eden, Utah native played for Bayern Munich’s first and second team, St. Polten and FC Twente since August 2021.

But in the Netherlands, Both, who signed a 3 1/2-year contract in Feb. 2025, has been held scoreless in 18 appearances — as Twente brought in fellow winger Filip Thorvaldsen from Valerenga, the most expensive signing in the club’s history.

Can Booth follow a similar path as his younger brother Zach, who returned home for playing time and excelled in a move to right wing back after the departure of fellow homegrown Zavier Gozo before the latter’s record-breaking move to Crystal Palace in the Premier League?

The elder Booth will have the remainder of the 2026 MLS campaign, as well as the 2027 “sprint” season next spring, to show what he can on his loan — which also includes a club option to buy.

Real Salt Lake may not be done making moves, either.

Club executive Jason Kreis recently told ESPN 700 radio that RSL was targeting at least three transfers before the close of the current window — two domestic, or that didn’t require a visa, and another international player.

That third player could still find his way on to the roster in the coming days, sources confirmed to Salt City Soccer.

Traffic may be outgoing, as well.

During a recent training, RSL forward Victor Olatunji was seen training by himself with a club staff member, apart from his teammates. Not currently injured but occasionally lacking for playing time, Mastroeni told reporters that the 26-year-old Nigerian international was in the midst of “some opportunities that are available to him."

“We want to make sure we do right by both parties, and make sure we don’t close any doors,” he added.

So while the transfer window is officially closed, don’t be surprised to see more movement in the Utah capitol.

That changed this week, with a significant upset of a power-conference opponent by an in-state foe.

Each week, we’ll rank the state’s seven NCAA Division I women’s soccer teams based on the week’s results, season’s body of work, and level of difficulty in competition, as well as any regional or national honors that may come their way.

Let’s try to make sense of the chaos.

1. BYU (3-1)

The 14th-ranked Cougars keep rolling with a 1-0 win last Thursday when Minnesota scored an own goal while trying to defending a follow-through from senior Mattyn Summers-Oviatt.

BYU out-shot the Gophers 12-4 and held 14% of possession to earn the 17th shutout in South Field history and collect their third win over a Big Ten foe.

The schedule doesn’t lighten up Thursday night in hosting new Pac-12 addition Colorado State before welcoming Oklahoma from the SEC for a Saturday afternoon kickoff (2 p.m. MT, ESPN+).

2. Utah State (3-1-1)

The Aggies collected a pair of in-state shutouts as Desert Hills alum Ellie Hendrix scored the game-winner in back-to-back 1-0 road wins over Utah Valley and the University of Utah.

Hendrix was named Pac-12 offensive player of the week for the honors, and sophomore goalkeeper Ivy Nystrom — whose heroics included stopping a penalty kick to preserve the win in Orem — was named league defensive player of the week.

The Aggies host Utah Tech at Chuck and Gloria Bell Field on Thursday before traveling to another Big 12 foe in Boulder, Colorado on Sunday.

3. Utah Valley (1-2-1)

The next three can considered a three-way tie for third, but we’re listing the Wolverines first based on most recent results.

Utah Valley collected its first win of the season in a big way, bouncing back from the loss to the Aggies with an emphatic 2-1 win over No. 17 Kansas at UCCU Stadium in Orem.

Malia Jessop scored her first goal of the season for Utah Valley, and Sadie Beardall converted off a high press to notch her first of the year by going through the Jayhawks goalkeeper to snap a three-match winless skid to start the season.

The Wolverines are in Hawaii this week for the OUTRIGGER No Ka Oi against Washington State and New Mexico State before returning to Orem to host San Diego State next Saturday, Sept. 12 (7 p.m. MT, ESPN+).

4. Utah (2-2-1)

Yes, a 2-0 win over a shorthanded UVU squad in Orem should matter.

But so do back-to-back losses to Utah State and Utah Tech for the Utes, who out-shot the Trailblazers 28-9 including 11-6 in shots on goal before Jocelyn Wright laced the match-winner in the 70th minute for the Trailblazers’ biggest win of the season.

Utah takes the two-game slide into Thursday’s trip to former Pac-12 rival Oregon.

5. Utah Tech (3-2-1)

The Trailblazers capped a 2-0 week with the first win over a power conference opponent since jumping to NCAA Division I in 2020.

After a 1-0 win at UC Riverside on Thursday, Abby Olsen scored an equalizer just 38 minutes after Utah’s Shannon Davidson gave the Utes a lead and Utah Tech held off the Utes prior to Wright’s late stunner in St. George.

“This was the best win I've been a part of in my time here,” Utah Tech head coach Lexi Brown said of the moment. “I am so incredibly proud of my team in how they competed, and our coaching staff for the game plan we set for this match. We knew it would be a lower possession game for us because of Utah's ability to create chaos with their pressure and interchanges, but I thought we did a really nice job executing tonight."

The Trailblazers can follow up the win with perhaps an even bigger statement against the Pac-12 favorites in Logan on Thursday.

6. Weber State (2-2-1)

The Wildcats followed up a two-game winning streak with a 3-0 road loss to Long Beach State, and stay on the road Thursday at Pacific (8 p.m. MT, ESPN+).

The Big Sky preseason favorites will then return home for a pair of matches against South Dakota State and UC Santa Barbara before a key trek to in-state rival Utah Valley on Sept. 19 (7 p.m. MT, ESPN+).

7. Southern Utah (2-3)

The Thunderbirds wrapped up their five-match season-opening road trip with losses to Utah and Sacramento State by an aggregate score of 5-1.

They’re back home Thursday against UC Irvine (4 p.m. MT, ESPN+) before hosting Justice College at 11 a.m. Sunday.

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — Coming from Estadio León at just over 5,000 feet above sea level in Guanajuato, Club León had to feel right at home in the Mile High City.

The well-traveled Liga MX side certainly looked it Tuesday night.

Díber Cambindo scored a brace as red-hot León won its fourth-straight Leagues Cup match away from home, blowing past Real Salt Lake 3-0 in a quarterfinal Tuesday night at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado.

Óscar García made six saves to earn the shutout for León, which advanced to the Leagues Cup semifinals after group-phase wins over Nashville, Orlando and Miami as part of a now-seven match winning streak across all competitions.

The top-seeded Liga MX side of the competition out-shot RSL 19-12, held the visitors playing just over 500 miles from their home stadium to two shots on target in the second half, and converted three of their eight attempts on frame to pull within one win of a CONCACAF Champions Cup berth.

“In the locker room, the word ‘pride’ came to mind,” León manager Javier Gandolfi told reporters in Spanish after the match. “To win seven-straight games in different venues is a huge accomplishment, and I wanted to congratulate the whole group.”

Real Salt Lake, meanwhile, will go home searching for answers with a return trip to the Denver metro area Saturday to face Rocky Mountain rivals Colorado Rapids in MLS play.

The group rested its starters on Saturday — all of them — during a 2-1 loss to Orlando City SC before flying directly to Denver for a quarterfinal it was certainly taking seriously.

Instead, RSL returns home empty-handed within the competition and sliding down the MLS western conference standings with a seven-match winless streak in league play.

“In football, there are moments in the season where you feel like you are dancing through the game,” RSL manager Pablo Mastroeni said. “There are other moments where you have to roll up your sleeve; I think we saw a little bit of that in Orlando.

“I don’t know if it’s fatigue, or can put a finger on the why,” he added. “But the structure is fine, and that’s maybe the biggest thing. The last three weeks to a month, we’ve done all of our coaching on video. But we haven’t touched the grass in such a way that allows us to show what the nitty gritty feels like.”

RSL rotated heavily to start, a total replacement of the Starting XI that included Saba Lobjanizde’s first start since moving from Atlanta United to Real Salt Lake on July 1 following the FIFA men’s World Cup.

But Leòn struck first in the 22nd minute through Cambindo. The 30-year-old Colombian scored his first goal of the tournament on a cross by Iván Moreno, who slid a ball into the box that DeAndre Yedlin attempted to clear before Cambindo redirected the play from a prone Yedlin into the back of the net.

The goal snapped Salt Lake’s 284-minute shutout streak in Leagues Cup play, the first goal allowed since the sixth minute of the club’s phase-one opener Aug. 4 against Tigres.

RSL was forced to make an early sub moments later, replacing midfielder Stijn Spierings with Pablo Ruiz in the 27th minute after the former left right a right ankle sprain.

Sergi Solans nearly equalized in the 37th minute with back-to-back attempts, but the newly extended striker from Lleida, Spain had both attempts blocked as the Guanajuato side took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Noel Caliskan found the back of the net less than four minutes into the second half for Real Salt Lake, but the offside flag was raised to keep León in front.

Instead, Sebastián Vegas doubled the advantage after finishing León’s seventh corner kick of the night in the 66th minute.

Cambindo added a third with a left-footed shot as he ran past Rafael Cabral in the 72nd minute to send León to the Leagues Cup semifinals.

“We created some chances tonight,” Mastroeni said. “But we didn’t score, and that’s not going to help … The effort was top. The guys will give maximum effort. But the game of football is a game of moments; it’s not 90 minutes, it’s 5,400 moments. And if you don’t get all of those right, you put yourself in position to not get the results you want.”

RSL will return to Salt Lake City on Wednesday, take a day to “decompress,” and return to training Thursday with full sights on a return to Colorado and snapping a dubious skid that saw the club slip from third in the West to eighth with an 8-8-4 record.

“We need to roll up our sleeves,” Mastroeni said, “bring our lunch pail, and get to work.”

The second week of the NCAA Division I women’s soccer season saw more of Utah’s seven teams picking up their first win of the year, and one that hasn’t yet allowed a goal.

Each week, we’ll rank the state’s seven NCAA Division I women’s soccer teams based on the week’s results, season’s body of work, and level of difficulty in competition, as well as any regional or national honors that may come their way.

It’s early. But a familiar name sits atop the list as the 2026 season begins. There’s almost no chance these rankings won’t move throughout the year.

So let’s have a little fun.

1. BYU (2-1-0)

The Cougars are halfway to a Big Ten West title after a 2-1 win over USC when Emma Hamberlin scored her first career brace Saturday night in a home opener at South Field.

With the win, BYU bounced back from a 1-0 loss at Wisconsin in the second of four-straight matches to open the 2026 regular season against Big Ten foes. The Cougars will wrap up the stint Thursday against Minnesota (7 p.m. MT, ESPN+) as part of a four-game homestand with a spot still secured in the United Soccer Coaches’ top 25.

2. Utah State (2-1-1)

Ellie Hendrix scored the only goal of the match from 25 yards out, and Ivy Nystrom made five saves — including stopping a second-half penalty kick — to earn her second-straight shutout in goal, 1-0 Monday night at Utah Valley.

The Aggies are on a three-match unbeaten streak ahead of Thursday’s road match at Utah, and still host Utah Tech and BYU, to name a few.

That Sept. 10 home match against the Cougars, in particular, should be must-see magic — especially if the two sides continue on their continue trajectory.

3. Utah (2-0-1)

Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Anna Solomon made two saves as the Utes kept their season-opening shutout streak alive with a 3-0 win over Southern Utah during a lengthy weather-delayed match Saturday afternoon at Ute Soccer Field.

The Oregon transfer joins Lindsey Luke as the only two Utah goalkeepers in program history with clean sheets in the first three matches of the season, the first since 2013. Utah also shut out its first three opponents in 2005 while playing two goalkeepers.

The Utes face their biggest test of the season Thursday hosting in-state rival Utah State (7 p.m. MT, ESPN+).

4. Utah Valley (0-2-1)

The Wolverines remained winless on the season — by the slimmest of margins — after Monday’s loss to Utah State.

Freshman goalkeeper Emily Bergero made eight saves in her first start between the pipes for Utah Valley, which has struggled to find the back of the net in scoring just one goal in its first three matches.

Snakebit or what, the Wolverines’ difficult nonconference schedule continues Thursday hosting No. 12 Kansas at 7 p.m. MT at UCCU Stadium.

5. Weber State (2-1-1)

The Wildcats won two games by identical margins, first going on the road to knock off Wyoming 2-1 before returning home to host Oregon State.

Davis High grad Simone Packer converted a penalty kick against the Beavers (1-3), and Skyridge grad Amanda Caswell scored the match-winner to push Weber State to a 2-1-1 start before Saturday’s road trip to Long Beach State.

6. Southern Utah (2-2-0)

More than three hours with a lightning delay and goals by Utah’s Brooke Gardner, Katie Callaway and Julia Oka combined to snap the Thunderbirds’ two-match winning streak.

SUU will wrap up a five-match road trip to open the season Thursday at Sacramento State.

7. Utah Tech (1-2-1)

After a 3-2 exhibition win at UNLV, the Trailblazers are winless against Division I opponents in the regular season after Sunday’s 3-0 home loss to Portland that was shortened due to extreme heat.

Jocelyn Wright had a goal and an assist to pick up Utah Tech’s first win of the year, 3-1 over Division II Westminster last Thursday night at Greater Zion Stadium. The Trailblazers hit the road again to travel to UC Riverside on Thursday before returning home to host Utah on Sunday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. MT.

Monday night brought a doubleheader to UCCU Stadium in Orem with the Utah Valley men’s and women’s soccer teams coming together in front of fans.

Utah Valley men improve to 2-0 with 1-0 win over Central Arkansas

Nil Grau scored his first goal of the season to help the UVU men’s soccer team improve to 2-0 with a 1-0 win over Central Arkansas in the first game of the Monday evening doubleheader.

Grau opened the scoring in the 25th minute, finishing off a long throw-in from Noah Pogue that Jose Luis Martin Montealegre flicked into the box for the Spaniard’s close-range finish for his first goal of the year.

Pogue, who grew up in Draper, has been working on being more effective from the throw-in.

The Corner Canyon graduate was definitely that, flipping a ball from the touchline that caromed off Montealegre in the penalty box before falling to Grau for the close-range look.

“As soon as I saw Noah holding the ball, I knew he has a rocket on his hands,” Grau said. “

The Wolverines out-shot Central Arkansas 10-7, and held the Bears without a shot on target in goalkeeper Kolby Sessions’ season debut between the posts.

Hendrix goal, Nystrom PK save push Utah State past UVU

Ellie Hendrix scored the only goal of the match in the 35th minute as Utah State improved to 2-1-1 with a 1-0 win over Utah Valley in the second match of the doubleheader.

The Aggies put each of their first eight shots on target, including Ellie Hendrix’s 35th-minute goal that came against the run of play.

But the Desert Hills alum took a pass from Samantha Sellers near the top of the penalty box and curved a well-placed ball that dipped inside the top left corner to give Utah State the halftime lead.

The Wolverines (0-2-1) found more of the ball in the second half, finishing with a 13-11 shots advantage and limiting the Aggies to a single shot on frame after halftime.

But Ivy Nystrom — who made just the second start of her career Monday night — made five saves to keep the shutout.

“I thought we executed the game plan almost to perfection in the first half,” USU coach Manny Martins said. “Maybe if we put away one of the others, it’s a different second half.

”But I’m not surprised. Utah Valley is an excellent squad … and I’m really proud of the group.”

The biggest may have come in the 73rd minute, when the sophomore from Phoenix stopped Mia Owens’ penalty kick to keep the visitors in front.

“We can’t evaluate ourselves solely on the scoreboard,” UVU coach Chris Lemay said after the game. “Obviously, it’s Division I college soccer and you want to win, but with that being said, you can play well and not get the result. I felt like we did a lot right tonight. I thought that we created a number of chances in the second half.”

SANDY, Utah — New additions to Real Salt Lake are starting to trickle towards the finish line, both from inside and outside the club.

But after selling longtime club star Zavier Gozo for a club-record transfer fee to Crystal Palace in England’s Premier League, are the reinforcements enough?

RSL manager Pablo Mastroeni was vocal about the fatigue after his team played its fifth game in 15 days across all competitions with a roster smacked by depth concerns, highlighted (or low-lighted) by medium- to long-term injuries to starting center back Justen Glad (adductor) and right wing back Zach Booth (hamstring).

“Nobody feels bad for us,” the head coach added.

“We can make a million excuses, but nobody cares. We’ve got to find solutions, and how we do that is together.”

But Mastroeni also stressed the franchise’s need for increased depth, especially if Real Salt Lake wants to contend for trophies in MLS play and the Leagues Cup, where it faces Liga MX side Club Leon in a quarterfinal next Tuesday at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado.

Sporting director Kurt Schmid is currently in Europe searching for additional players, with team sources indicating there are several targets during the current window.

Real Salt Lake is also working to finalize an agreement on a long-term extension for breakout star Sergi Solans, the rookie striker with 11 goals and three assists across all competitions whom ESPN’s Jeff Carlisle reported will sign a 4 1/2-year extension that begins Jan. 1 and includes a “significant raise” for the 2025 first-round MLS SuperDraft pick.

“I’m very happy to be here,” Solans said after scoring a goal Wednesday in the club’s 4-3 loss to FC Dallas, “and I’m grateful to the club that gave me an opportunity when nobody knew who I was.”

Another domino cleared the finish line Friday morning, when RSL finalized the addition of 19-year-old U.S. youth international midfielder Colin Guske from Orlando City SC on loan for the rest of the 2026 MLS season.

The deal also nets $50,000 in in 2026 general allocation money for Orlando, which agreed to a permanent trade option should RSL decide to acquire the midfielder full-time prior to Dec. 31.

“I’m really excited for this opportunity with RSL,” said Guske, who made 16 first-team appearances including four starts with Orlando. “I’ve always seen this club with passionate supporters, a team with a strong identity, clearly focused on growth and development, while finding ways to win.”

Guske flew to Salt Lake City midweek to finalize the arrangement, per RSL’s announcement.

“I’m looking forward to learning under Coach Pablo, who played at a high level, bringing a lot of experience and knowledge to the game,” he added. “I’m grateful to be here and ready to get to work.”

Guske recently played a full 90 minutes in Orlando’s 2-2 Leagues Cup draw with Atletico San Luis. The homegrown midfielder also played 45 matches in MLS NEXT Pro with Orlando City B, totaling 3,648 minutes with one goal and four assists.

He’s the latest midfield addition to the squad, though most have come internally. Argentine playmaker Pablo Ruiz played his most minutes since returning from a pair of injuries two years ago during the phase one of Leagues Cup, starting two of three matches with goals against Atlante and Tigres.

Emeka Eneli is also primed to return to full training with the team after undergoing a minor knee surgery to address a patella condition in late March. Any full timeline for his return remains unclear, but club executive Jason Kreis told ESPN 700 earlier this week that a return for the later stages of the 2026 MLS campaign remains a strong possibility.

The same could be true of Ari Piol, who underwent surgery in early March to repair a torn Achilles’ tendon tendon the Australian striker suffered in the club’s home-opener against Seattle.

Typical recovery for such an injury with surgery is six to nine months to return to full activities, including running and jumping.

But with the summer transfer window open until Sept. 2 - give or take a few days for the league office to process paperwork for finalized decisions, usually — the next 10 days will be critical in Real Salt Lake’s ceiling for the remainder of the season.

With an active six-match winless skid in MLS play and a three-game road trip in the immediate purview, the rest of the campaign rests on the present.

SANDY, Utah — Real Salt Lake’s winless skid extended to six consecutive matches in MLS play with a 4-3 loss to FC Dallas in front of an announced crowd of 20,632 fans Wednesday night at America First Field.

Ran Binyamin scored a late game-winner as FC Dallas (9-5-6, 33 points) took all 3 points from Real Salt Lake, dropping the hosts to eighth in MLS’s western conference.

Diego Luna had a goal and an assist for RSL (8-7-4, 28 points), and Sergi Solans scored for a fourth-straight game in all competitions in the fifth time in six matches in the past month to continue his MLS rookie-leading pace with nine goals.

Petar Musa scored his league-leading 15th and 16th goals for Dallas, becoming the one of the 10 fastest players to 50 goals in MLS history with his brace.

Morgan Guilavogui scored his third goal and recorded his ninth assist since the Designated Player arrived in Salt Lake in the offseason.

SANDY, Utah — Utah native Zavier Gozo is headed to South London, the result of a long-term deal with a club-record transfer fee between Real Salt Lake and Crystal Palace reportedly worth close to $15 million that includes a “significant” sell-on percentage for the MLS club.

But before he left, the 19-year-old winger left a mark and a legacy on his boyhood club unique to the youngster’s age.

Born in West Valley and raised in Eagle Mountain, Gozo represents the good in the state of Utah. The first-ever Utah native selected to the MLS All-Star Game this past summer, Gozo is a proud member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a hard-working soccer prodigy, and a U.S. youth international with eyes on breaking into Mauricio Pochettino’s first team prior to the 2030 FIFA men’s World Cup co-hosted by Morocco, Spain and Portugal.

But before Gozo formally left the club where he enrolled at the RSL Academy by his freshman year in high school, he penned a letter to RSL fans and Utahns everywhere, thanking them for the support of the hometown kid.

I just want to take a moment and say thank you.

It’s hard to put into words what this club, this state and this community mean to me. As a homegrown kid from Utah, Real Salt Lake has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. This is home. This is where I grew up. This is where I learned what it means to work, to sacrifice, to believe and to wear this crest with pride.

So many of you believed in me before the rest of the world knew my name. You saw me as a young kid chasing a dream, and you helped make that dream become reality.

My faith has guided me. My family has carried me. This club developed me. And this community gave me the belief that something bigger was possible.

From the academy to the first team, every coach, every teammate, every staff member and every fan has helped shape who I am today.

You pushed me, supported me and showed me what it means to represent Utah the right way.

I hope more kids across Utah give soccer a try, join their local teams and keep learning and growing this beautiful game. I also hope young athletes across this state can see that top talent is being developed right here in Utah, and that big dreams can grow from home. Thanks to the Miller family and Miller Sports and Entertainment for investing in the club and me personally.

Each week, we’ll rank the state of Utah’s seven NCAA Division I women’s soccer teams based on the week’s results, season’s body of work, and level of difficulty in competition, as well as any regional or national honors that may come their way.

It’s early. But a familiar name sits atop the list as the 2026 season begins. There’s almost no chance these rankings won’t move throughout the year.

So let’s have a little fun.

1. BYU (1-0-0)

The Cougars made a statement last Wednesday with the best win of opening week on the road.

After being picked seventh in the Big 12 and outside the coaches’ preseason top 25, BYU came back for a 2-1 road win over then-No. 9 UCLA to start head coach Jennifer Rockwood’s final campaign in victory.

The Cougars got an early goal from Mattyn Summers-Oviatt, and true freshman Brynnli Tolbert scored the match-winner just after the hour mark to snap the Bruins’ 10-match winning streak in season openers with the Cougars’ first win in Westwood since 1998.

It doesn’t get any easier for BYU, which faces another Big Ten team Wednesday at Wisconsin before Saturday’s home opener against USC (7 p.m. MT, ESPN+).

2. Utah State (0-1-1)

The Aggies bounced back from a 2-0 loss to then-No. 15 Kansas in the season opener to draw Michigan, 2-2 in the Sunday night home opener at Chuck and Gloria Bell Field in Logan.

Utah State controlled much of the match, scoring in the 19th minute off a long-range banger from Mia Mullenmeister before BYU transfer Mia Lopez doubled the advantage in the 32nd minute.

But Michigan came back after halftime, pulling one back through Ella Jablinskey in the 69th minute before Ellie Fife equalized in the final second of the match with a long ball that took an awkward bounce through traffic and into the back of the net.

The Aggies host Portland on Thursday (7:30 p.m. MT, Pac-12 YouTube) before traveling to Utah Valley on Monday.

3. Utah (1-0-1)

The Utes opened the season with a scoreless draw against in-state rival Weber State, where Anna Solomon made two saves as Utah out-shot the Wildcats 17-14.

It was the Utah debut for 17 newcomers, including former Ogden High standout and Portland transfer Nevaeh Peregrina who had one of the Utes’ seven shots on target.

But Reese Clem and Katie Calloway secured Utah’s first win of the season Monday night, shutting out a shorthanded Utah Valley squad 2-0 to earn back-to-back shutouts for fifth-year senior goalkeeper Solomon.

4. Utah Valley (0-1-1)

The Wolverines opened the season with a 1-1 draw against Michigan, out-shooting the Big Ten visitors 14-13 with six shots on target.

BYU transfer Addie Olson put the hosts in front in the 32nd minute, a lead Utah Valley took into halftime.

Adi Walick equalized off in the 54th minute when UVU was called for a penalty, and the junior Regis transfer from Colorado buried the ensuing kick from the spot to help the visiting Wolverines escape with a tie and help keep Utah Valley winless on the season.

Utah Valley then fell behind the Utes in Monday’s in-state rivalry match at UCCU Stadium. After true freshman goalkeeper Madeleine Boucher was sent off with a red card 42 minutes in, the Utes put two past freshman shot stopper Emily Bergero in the second half to hand the Wolverines their first loss of the year.

5. Southern Utah (2-1-0)

Picked to finish 10th in the 10-team Big Sky by league coaches, the Thunderbirds won two of three from a six-day road trip to South Carolina to open the season.

After a 3-1 loss to College of Charleston, Southern Utah picked up a 1-0 win over South Carolina State on Friday before Sophia Memory scored the only goal of a 1-0 win over The Citadel on Monday.

The Thunderbirds played their fourth of a five-match road trip to open the season Saturday at Utah. Kickoff from Salt Lake City is scheduled for 3 p.m. MT on ESPN+.

6. Weber State (0-1-1)

The Wildcats followed up the midweek draw at Utah with a 4-1 loss to Boise State in Sunday’s home opener.

Sayler Schlosser, the fifth-year senior from Lone Peak who had five goals with three assists a year ago, opened her account with a 31st-minute equalizer from Oakley Anderson before the Broncos pulled away for good.

Weber State travels to Laramie on Thursday to face Mountain West foe Wyoming at 4 p.m. MT on Mountain West+ before returning home to host Oregon State at 1 p.m. MT Sunday.

7. Utah Tech (0-1-1)

After a 1-1 draw at UC Irvine, the Trailblazers dropped a 4-2 decision to UC San Diego to close out a two-match Big West road swing on Saturday.

Ella Rusick helped the Trailblazers earn a 1-1 draw in the season opener at UC Irvine, receiving a through ball from former Timpanogos High forward Lataya Brost and beating the defense just 64 seconds in before the Anteaters came back.

Utah Tech hosts Division II Westminster in the home opener Thursday at 7 p.m. MT before hosting Portland on Sunday at 11 a.m. MT. Both matches will be broadcast on ESPN+.

SANDY, Utah — Sergi Solans scored his fourth goal in the last five matches for Real Salt Lake (8-6-4, 28 points) across all competitions, and eighth of the season as the rookie from Lleida, Spain, works on his campaign for MLS Newcomer of the Year award for 2026.

Joaquín Pereyra equalized in the 89th minute, and Drake Callender made six saves to make it stand up for Minnesota (6-6-7, 25 points).

But perhaps a greater concern came in the first 12 minutes of the game, when RSL starting wing back Zach Booth pulled up clutching his right hamstring after challenging for the ball. The Utah native had to be helped to the locker room by team medical staff, and was quickly ruled out with a right hamstring injury — an injury that head coach Pablo Mastroeni said would likely keep him out for a significant amount of time, at least six weeks.

Dominik Marczuk was the early sub for Booth, and Mastroeni noted that DeAndre Yedlin — who was suspended for Saturday night’s contest due to yellow-card accumulation — is in line to play the wing back spot in Salt Lake’s 3-4-3 formation.

RSL returns to Sandy to host FC Dallas on Wednesday, August 19 for its fifth and final home game in a stretch of 15 days. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. MT on Apple TV.

But not everything is at it once was.

Conference realignment has re-shaped the map, and Utah is no different. So let’s catch up on what you may have missed since last fall before the ball kicks off Wednesday night.

Utah State is now in the Pac-12 — and picked to win it

There’s hardly been a more meteoric rise than Manny Martins and the Aggies, who have won back-to-back-to-back Mountain West tournament titles and NCAA Tournament berths in the past three years.

But this year, Utah State will start from a different position: The Pac-12.

The Aggies are officially part of the new-look conference after 13 seasons in the Mountain West, joining former conference mates Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State and San Diego State along with Oregon State and Washington State from the old Pac-12 and Texas State from the Sun Belt.

Year 1, and there’s already a target on their backs.

Utah State was picked to win the Pac-12 by a vote of conference coaches, the league announced Tuesday, along with three players selected to the conference’s preseason impact list.

The Aggies are led by former Copper Hills defender Kaeda Wilson, who started all 23 matches a year ago to total a team-high 2,091 minutes and anchor a back line that gave up a Mountain West-low 0.91 goals-against average with a league-high nine shutouts.

She’s joined on the Pac-12 impact list by sophomore midfielder Kunie Hirai from Boise, and Mia Lopez, the Logan native who transferred home after earning Big 12 All-Freshman honors with six goals in 1,300 minutes at BYU.

Utah State will open the season Wednesday at No. 15 Kansas (6 p.m. MT, ESPN+) before a nonconference schedule that also includes Michigan, Utah, Colorado, BYU and Saint Mary’s.

But one advantage of the move to the Pac-12? Every Aggie home game will be streamed live FREE on the Pac-12’s YouTube channel.

Wildcats tabbed Big Sky favorites, too

The Aggies aren’t the only preseason favorites in their conference.

For the first time in 17 years, Weber State was selected No. 1 in a vote of Big Sky coaches — a mark of respect under second-year head coach and reigning Big Sky coach of the year Kyle Christensen who led the Wildcats to a 12-6-2 record and second-place finish in the league a year ago.

Weber State had four players named to the Big Sky preseason all-conference team, including rising junior Oakley Anderson from Woods Cross, former Olympus High standout Lily Blum, Farmington’s Bella Sackett, and goalkeeper Lauren Butorac from Portland.

After a 6-1 exhibition win over Salt Lake Community College, the Wildcats will open the 2026 regular season Wednesday at in-state rival Utah (7 p.m. MT, ESPN+).

What about the Big 12 in Utah?

Speaking of the Utes, head coach Hideki Nakada’s side added 18 new faces to the roster in the offseason, the most for a single team in program history with a handful of stalwart returners.

Utah natives Abby Affleck (Syracuse) and Callie Blaylock (East) are back for Utah, which adds a talented group of six freshmen and 12 transfers including top-60 player Ava Escobedo from Riverton and and Mia Avery, who was a member of the Michigan Hawks that won the 2023 ECNL national title.

The Utes were picked to finish 11th in the Big 12 preseason coaches’ poll, five spots behind in-state rival BYU at sixth.

Jennifer Rockwood’s final year with the program she helped start in NCAA Division I more than three decades ago will rely heavily on Ellie Walbruch, who returns for her senior season after leading the Cougars with 16 goals on 41 shots on target a year ago, as well as All-Big 12 defensive midfielder Lucy Kesler and All-Big 12 second-team selection Presley Freeman at outside back.

Look also for midfielders Mika Krommenhoek from Mapleton and Afton Perry from Saratoga Springs to leave an impact. And don’t forget an intensely talented freshman class of Kate Fuller, Ellie Karl, Anna Neff, Sophie Williams, Brynnli Tolbert, Sydney Snow and Diana Tuilevuka for BYU, which opens the season Wednesday at UCLA (8 p.m. MT, Big Ten+).

Big Sky additions

Utah Tech women’s soccer opens its first season in the Big Sky on the road Wednesday night at UC Irvine (7 p.m. MT, ESPN+).

The Trailblazers were picked to finish third in the Big Sky preseason coaches’ poll, receiving one first-place vote ahead of their inaugural season in the league.

Jocelyn Wright from Herriman and Bre Koscielski from Spokane, Washington, are two all-conference players to watch a year after Wright won WAC freshman of the year honors and All-WAC second-team distinction with six goals.

Southern Utah returns to the Big Sky under new management after Steven Lindquist was promoted following the departure of former coach Kai Edwards to San Diego State.

The Thunderbirds, who open the season Wednesday at College of Charleston, went 3-12-3 including a 2-7-1 mark in their final season in the WAC and were picked at the bottom of the 10-team Big Sky by league coaches.

Utah Valley heads West

Mia Owens, Josie (Shephard) Clawson and senior forward Nixan Jackson will lead the Wolverines’ latest realignment play in their first season in the Big West.

The pair of all-conference preseason selections have Utah Valley picked to finish third in the Big West behind co-favorites Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara, as well as CSU Fullerton.

Keep an eye on senior forward Sadie Beardall, the Bonneville High alum who erupted over the summer while playing with Utah United in USL W League.

SANDY, Utah — After three matches of Phase 1 of Leagues Cup 2026, Real Salt Lake remains in contention to be one of four teams to advance to the knockout stage.

Even if only for another day.

Morgan Guilavogui, Sergi Solans and Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos each scored a goal, and Rafael Cabral made two saves to earn his second consecutive clean sheet as RSL pulled away for a 3-0 win over FC Juarez in a phase-one finale for both clubs Tuesday night at America First Field.

With the win, Salt Lake climbed to 7 points with a 2-1-0 record in Leagues Cup, one point behind Columbus for the most in the MLS side of the bracket that will qualify four teams to the knockout rounds.

But three of the five teams on 6 points play Wednesday night, and LAFC is just a point back on 5 points ahead of its own phase-one capper against Queretaro FC.

That means RSL will be hoping for a loss from at least two of Austin FC (against Club America), Chicago Fire (against Cruz Azul), FC Dallas (against Toluca), and potentially LAFC.

SANDY, Utah — Down but not out after a 1-1 draw with Tigres, Real Salt Lake put on a dominating performance against Liga MX’s Atlante FC to take the second outing of the 2026 Leagues Cup with a 4-0 win.

Sergi Solans and Zach Booth scored on either side of halftime, and Rafael Cabral made four saves to clinch the club’s first shutout win across all competitions since May 13 against Houston.

After RSL manager Pablo Mastroeni made six changes to his starting XI from Tuesday’s draw, Diego Luna recorded two assists to open the scoring with finishes by Solans and Booth.

Lukas Engel quickly found a third off Morgan Guilavogui’s one-touch pass following Luna’s free kick in the 54th minute for the defender’s second goal in the past five matches, and Pablo Ruiz put the nail in the proverbial coffin with RSL’s fourth before the end of 90 minutes.

Salt Lake will host FC Juarez in the final match of Phase One of the Leagues Cup competition Tuesday, Aug. 11. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. MT on Apple TV.

SANDY, Utah — Real Salt Lake dropped the penalty shootout tiebreaker to Tigres UANL after a 1-1 draw in the Leagues Cup opener for both teams Tuesday night at America First Field

After Juan Brunetta gave Tigres the lead in the sixth minute of play, Pablo Ruiz equalized with his first goal since June 2023 just 10 minutes later to pull both sides to 1-1 at halftime.

RSL out-shot the visitors 16-13 and held Tigres to just four shots on goal, but couldn’t find the go-ahead score in regulation — forcing the penalty shootout tiebreaker under current Leagues Cup rules.

Juan Manuel Sanabria, Sergi Solans, Diego Luna, Noel Caliskan and Lukas Engel all converted from the spot for Real Salt Lake before Tigres’ Jesús Garza scored the decisive penalty in sudden-death extra kicks to clinch the extra point.

Salt Lake returns to Leagues Cup play Saturday with the second of five games in 15 days, hosting Atlante FC. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. MT on Apple TV.

SANDY, Utah — Zavier Gozo’s time with Real Salt Lake is nearing an end.

The club and player are in advanced talks with Premier League club Crystal Palace on a multi-million dollar transfer, a source confirmed to Salt City Soccer. The Athletic was the first to report details of the transfer, which is expected to fetch a fee “in the range” of $15 million.

Gozo has six goals and five assists in 16 matches in 2026 for Real Salt Lake in what has been declared a breakout campaign as the longtime winger moved to right wingback in Pablo Mastroeni’s 3-5-2 set-up. The move, plus Gozo’s inherent speed and athleticism, allowed the teenager to feature more in the attack in addition to his long-showcased dribbling ability.

The source did not confirm a timeline for Gozo’s move, but the transfer is expected to be concluded before the Sept. 2 close of the summer transfer window in MLS.

ESPN, which also reported a transfer fee “in the range of” $15 million, said the deal is expected to be finalized in the 24 to 48 hours following RSL’s Leagues Cup opener with Tigers UANL.

Gozo would then travel to London on Friday upon the final agreement, per ESPN.

In Crystal Palace, Gozo would join a Premier League side under new management in former RC Lens manager Pierre Sage, who was hired in June after Oliver Glasner accepted the same position at Nottingham Forest.

Palace is currently the home of U.S. defender Chris Richards, which would make Gozo the second American on the roster.

SANDY, Utah — The Utah Royals didn’t let Sophia Wilson’s fastest goal of the NWSL season set them back.

Cece Delzer scored her first career brace, and Cloé Lacasse etched her name into the URFC record book in a 5-1 win over the Portland Thorns that propelled the Royals back near the top of the NWSL standings.

Wilson needed 34 seconds to give the Thorns (8-4-6, 28 points) the early advantage. But Utah took advantage after the first-half hydration break as temperatures hit triple digits at kickoff to flip the script.

Delzer scored her first in the 31st minute, finishing a well-place sequence from Miyabi and Kiana Palacios to pull Utah (10-5-3, 33 points) level.

She then added her fourth goal in the past six matches two minutes after halftime, connecting with Lacasse’s cross that etched the Canadian international into the club record books with the most goal contributions in a single season (11).

Lacasse wasn’t done, though.

She set up Brecken Mozingo’s first goal of the year with another pinpoint cross in the 68th minute that stretched Utah’s advantage to 3-1. After Palacios pulled another back following an absurd bit of skill from Miyabi down the flank, Lacasse found Kate Del Fava for her second goal from a header to wrap up the scoring in the 88th minute for the final margin.

The Royals’ 31st goal of the season gave them a franchise-best, including a league-high six goals off corner kicks.

Utah hits the road Saturday, August 8 to take on Rocky Mountain rival Denver Summit FC. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. MT on ION TV.

SANDY, Utah — Real Monarchs were down, but not out in Saturday night’s return to America First Field.

Jesus Barea scored in the 89th minute as Real Monarchs rallied to a 2-1 win over Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 to clinch all 3 points at home.

Yeider Zuluaga gave the Whitecaps (4-12-3, 17 points) an early lead, firing a low shot inside the bottom right corner to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.

Felix Ewald equalized just 10 minutes later, neatly heading home Luis Rivera’s corner kick in the 39th minute en route to a 1-1 halftime draw.
