Another One: Utah Avalanche also joining USL League Two for 2024 season
The Midvale-based youth club that has fielded a boys' academy since 2020 will join Utah United as expansion teams from Utah in the ever-expanding Mountain Division in 2024.
Another Utah lower-division academy is making the move to the pre-professional ranks of North American soccer.
Utah Avalanche has come to an agreement to participate in USL League Two beginning with the 2024 season, the club announced jointly this week with the league.
The Midvale-based youth club that has fielded a boys' academy since 2020 will join Utah United as expansion teams from Utah in the ever-expanding Mountain Division in 2024.
Last year’s Mountain Division featured the Park City (now Utah) Red Wolves and UYSA-backed Salt City SC from Utah; Flatirons Rush and CISA from Colorado; and New Mexico United U-23s. Since the end of the year, the division has also added Utah United, an academy team co-owned and coached by Salt Lake Community College head coach Mark Davis that will play in Utah County.
Originally founded as a women and girls club side in 2001, Avalanche added a boys’ program in 2020 following the merger of Forza FC and AFC Apex into one unit. The club has since grown to over 5,000 members long the Wasatch Front in several recreational, academy and competitive programs.
The club counts more than 4,000 players across 158 Avalanche teams, and has produced more than 425 collegiate players, according to Avalanche’s website.
The organization has won national titles, including the Under-13 U.S. Youth Soccer boys championship in 2021 and a Presidents Cup title.
“We are really looking forward to joining League Two. Being a member of such an elite platform will really benefit our membership,” Avalanche technical director Jimmie Powell said in a statement. "This opportunity gives our youth players a first team for which to aspire and rounds out the player pathway within the club. It's a big challenge and we look forward to earning our stripes.”
