College soccer roundup: Cuevas' late stunner leads Utah Tech past Utah Valley
Sami Cuevas whipped a shot from a tight angle in the 86th minute to help the Trailblazers rally for a 2-1 win over in-state rival UVU in St. George.

It’s been a minute since we checked in with local college soccer, so let’s take a look around the state at some of the most notable results across Division I.
We’ll start in Southern Utah, where Utah Tech kept UVU’s troubles continuing with a late-game stunner.
Utah Tech 2, Utah Valley 1
Sami Cuevas scored the match-winner with less than five minutes remaining as the Trailblazers rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to down in-state rival Utah Valley, 2-1 at Greater Zion Stadium on Thursday night.
Cuevas whipped a shot from a tight angle in the 86th minute, handing the Wolverines (1-6-4) their second loss in Western Athletic Conference play.
But it was Utah Valley that struck first through Alejandro Silva’s free kick 33 minutes into the match for a 1-0 lead that held through halftime.
Austin Wallace headed home the match-tying goal from Andre Saucedo in the 73rd minute, setting the stage for Cuevas’ late heroics as the Trailblazers improved to 6-4 (2-0 WAC).
"This is an emotional one because it's UVU and all the guys know each other so I'm happy for them," said Utah Tech coach Jonny Broadhead, a former UVU assistant for three years before taking the Utah Tech (then-Dixie State) job for the past seven seasons. "We created some opportunities but we weren't that sharp in the first half, but I'll give credit our guys. Jerod Allen subbed on in the second half, really did a great job weathering the storm and we found some holes behind. What a ball from Jerod to (Austin Wallace) for his fourth goal and (Sami Cuevas) his third goal in three games, that's our third come from behind win.
"The resiliency to come from behind, what that does for these guys, they're on cloud nine," Broadhead added. "There were tons of fans out here tonight which also made an impact. Slow start but ultimately a great response in the second half."

Utah Valley 3, Tarleton State 0
Ruby Hladek, Heather Stainbrook and Nicole Olanda each scored as the Wolverines extended their unbeaten streak to eight matches with a 3-0 win over the Texans in Stephenville, Texas.
CJ Graham made two saves to earn the shutout for UVU, which held the Texans to five shots.
Utah Valley improved to 7-3-4 overall and 4-0-1 in WAC play, including a four-game winning streak that drops Tarleton to 4-8-3 and 1-3-1 in the conference.
"We're happy with a shutout and three points," said UVU coachChris Lemay. "We created a lot of scoring opportunities. We were just a step off today with 30 shots and only three goals. Sometimes you just got to grind it out. We'll take the three points and the shutout and move on to Sunday."
Utah State 2, New Mexico 0
Kaylie Chambers and Alysia Butters each scored a goal to help Utah State win its fourth-straight contest with a road shutout over the Lobos at UNM Soccer Complex in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Diera Walton made five saves to earn the shutout for the Aggies (7-6-1, 4-1 Mountain West), whose winning streak is the longest since the 2014 season.
Utah State next faces San Diego State on Sunday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m. on the Mountain West Network.
Utah Tech 3, Stephen F. Austin 0
Ella Rusick, Emily Garbett and Tessa Thornton each scored a goal as the Trailblazers shut out the Lumberjacks at SFA Soccer Field.
Bryanna Hofheins was credited with 10 saves to earn the shutout for Utah Tech, which improved to 6-4-4 with their first win in WAC play.
Utah 1, Cal 1
Katie O’Kane scored her team-high seventh goal of the season from the penalty spot as the University of Utah use an 88th-minute goal to draw the Golden Bears at Ute Soccer Field.
Abby Borchers gave Cal (5-3-4, 2-0-2 Pac-12) a 1-0 lead in the 73rd minute, but the Utes (5-3-5, 1-1-2) came back when Kennedy Schoennauer was fouled in the box just over two minutes from time.
That set up O’Kane’s winner, becoming the first Utah player to score seven goals in a season since Paola Van der Veen in 2018.
BYU 2, Texas Tech 2
Jamie Shepherd and Ellie Walbruch scored in either half to help No. 7 BYU tie league-leading Texas Tech, 2-2 in front of a capacity crowd of 5,201 fans at South Field in Provo.
The Cougars (11-1-3, 3-0-3 Big 12) out-shot the Red Raiders 16-8, but put just seven shots on target to three for Texas Tech, who are currently tied atop the Big 12 standings at 11-0-3 (5-0-1 Big 12).
“When we step on South Field in front of our awesome fan base, we expect to win,” said BYU coach Jennifer Rockwood. “We played some really quality minutes tonight. We had opportunities in the first half that we didn’t capitalize on. We played a top-10 team in the country tonight, and Texas Tech is a very good team.”
