League Twosday: Utah Avalanche takes 2-1 win from Battle of Debuts
USL League Two opened this past season, a league that includes three teams in Utah that make up the "Wasatch" portion of the Mountain division and an expansion side that earned its first win.
Starting a franchise from scratch can be a tough ordeal, even at the USL League Two level. But two Utah sides that held their inaugural pre-professional match Saturday opened against each other at Clyde Field on the campus of Utah Valley University.
Aiden McMullin’s goal in the 48th minute helped Utah Avalanche take all three points on the road against Utah United, sending the Avalanche to the top of the Mountain division (after just one match, admittedly) from Matchday 1.
The Avalanche are tied on points with New Mexico United U-23s, with each claiming a +1 goal differential following a pair of 2-1 wins.
Alejandro Silva scored the inaugural goal for Utah United from the penalty spot, but Samir Cuevas equalized for Avalanche in the 45th minute to send both teams into halftime tied at 1-1.
By the 48th minute, Avalanche took control through McMullin’s strike to snatch the win.

Avalanche is off until June 3 when it plays at Salt City SC, which was off in Week 1. Utah United hits the road to Colorado to face CISA on Thursday at Lutheran High School, followed by a trip to Flatirons FC on Saturday.
