Magic of the Cup: Real Salt Lake will open US Open Cup in Las Vegas
USL Championship side Las Vegas Lights FC will host RSL in the third round of the Open Cup, U.S. Soccer announced Thursday after a draw.
A wild second round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup has nearly wrapped up with four wild #CUPsets Wednesday night.
Four lower-division sides upset higher-division opponents in Wednesday’s Second Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup as South Georgia Tormenta FC, Union Omaha, Tulsa Athletic and Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC all advanced their clubs in the bracket.
Real Salt Lake fans will likely remember the Hailstorm, who famously arrived at then-Rio Tinto Stadium a year ago and stunned the hosts, 1-0 with just over 19,000 tickets sold.
The USL League One side will be back again, but this time at MLS side Colorado Rapids.
RSL, instead, will travel to USL Championship contender Las Vegas Lights FC. The game will kick off Wednesday, April 26 in Sin City, the Lights FC announced.
The other Mountain region draw will pit USL Championship rivals New Mexico United and Phoenix Rising FC against each other.
Led by Mexico-born Canadian international Isidro Sánchez, the Lights are coming off a 4-0 win over NISA side Los Angeles Force. Among the squad are former Mexican international Erick “Cubo” Torres.
Among the early storylines between RSL and Lights FC, new forward Danny Musovski — who grew up in Henderson, Nevada — scored five goals in 15 appearances with Las Vegas while on loan from LAFC.
