'Peak Utah': RSL has a new look inspired by the mountains of the Beehive State
Real Salt Lake unveiled the club’s new “Peak Utah” jersey, a modern take on its classic claret-and-cobalt look, Thursday.
What’s better than one new look on the year’s kit (in the former of a new primary jersey-front sponsor)?
How about two?
Real Salt Lake unveiled the club’s new “Peak Utah” jersey Thursday, a modern take on the classic claret-and-cobalt primary kit that will be worn during the 2024 and 2025 MLS seasons.
The seemingly FC Barcelona-inspired blue-and-red stripes (OK, not really … but the look at least deserves a nod, if for no other reason than it is represented by a club that once formed a business partnership with Real Madrid in its early days) is perhaps one of the most innovative takes on the darker jersey in years. But it still maintains the Claret-and-Cobalt tradition that fans of the club have enjoyed.
Of particular note is the mountainous silhouette spread across the chest of the shirt, a nod to the Wasatch Mountains that surround RSL’s home fortress of America First Field and the mountains that inspire all Utahns, as RSL legend Brian Dunseth notes in a video introducing the design. Alternating claret red-and-cobalt blue stripes also run vertically across the jersey, with gold trim and accents to highlight RSL’s tertiary team color.
“In our previous 20 years as a club, we’ve never done anything that shows how symbolic our mountains are for the entire state of Utah,” said RSL vice president of marketing and game presentation Tyler Gibbons in a statement from the club. “When we were designing this a few years ago, our thoughts centered on creating a traditional RSL primary kit with a modern, localized twist. We couldn’t be happier with the final product and can’t wait to see it our fans and players wear it.”
The video highlights Utah’s different mountains, including the snow-capped peaks covered in fresh powder illustrated by winter sports enthusiasts in the north, as well as the red-rock boulders of Southern Utah’s national parks, highlighted by hiking, climbing and bouldering in the desert.
Dunseth narrates the minute-long clip, while midfielder Pablo Ruiz — the left-footed wonder whose knee injury dealt a humbling blow to the team in 2023 — shows off the new kit in action on the pitch.
Like the Beehive kit before it, the new jersey-front sponsor of Select Health — the insurance arm of Utah-based Intermountain Healthcare that formalized a long-term partnership with the club Wednesday — is also prominently displayed across the chest. Intermountain’s logo is also on the shirt’s sleeve, similar to a patch that will also show on the sleeve of Utah Royals FC’s jersey for the clubs’ re-introduction to the NWSL in 2024.
The “Peak Utah” kit is now available at the remodeled Real Salt Lake Team Store, located at the northeast corner of America First Field (9256 S. State Street in Sandy, Utah). The store, now managed by Fanatics, is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. MST, and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., as well as online at rslteamstore.com.
