Utah Valley will take the No. 1 seed into next week’s Western Athletic Conference Tournament in Riverside, California, after the Wolverines shut out in-state rival Southern Utah 3-0 to claim their second-straight WAC regular-season title.
The Wolverines (10-3-5, 7-0-2 WAC) got goals from Sydney Bushman, Heather Stainbrook and Taylor Nelson in the win over the Thunderbirds, stretching a 12-match unbeaten run that dates back to a 6-1 loss to No. 7 BYU way back on Sept. 2.
Utah Valley has won a WAC regular-season title in three of the past four years, with hardware in 2020, 2022 and now 2023 among head coach Chris Lemay’s 76 wins.
"I'm happy for our team," Lemay said. "It's not just about one game. It's about nine games and going 7-0-2 is always going to be tough and we were able to do it. Ironically, we didn't play our best tonight, but we came out a lot better in the second half and started to move the ball. We'll have to be better in the tournament to get the results we want there. Winning championships is tough and we're going to enjoy this tonight."
