Real Salt Lake crept ever-so closer to a fifth consecutive Western Conference playoff berth with a 1-0 win over Colorado in the regular-season home finale Saturday night at America First Field in Sandy, Utah.
Diogo Gonçalves scored the lone goal of the match in the first half for his second consecutive match with a goal contribution, finishing a 39th-minute cut from Rwan Cruz.
Rafa Cabral and the RSL defense did the rest improving the Salt Lake side to 12-16-4 for 40 points on the year, a tie for ninth place with three games remaining and a game in hand on the Rapids above 10th.
“Gritty. Hard-fought. Resilient,” RSL manager Pablo Mastroeni said in summarizing the win, before adding: “Full of belief.”
RSL goalkeeper Rafael Cabral earned MLS Team of the Matchday selection honors with his seventh shutout in MLS play, as the club’s “Iron Man” — the only player to have played all 3,330 minutes across 37 games all competitions this season and donning the captain’s armband for a 20th contest.
