Every week of the 2024 season, Salt City FC will recognize a top Division I women's soccer player from Utah for excellence on the field.
For the first week of the 2024 season — the week ending Aug. 18 — we’re starting with Utah Valley forward Faith Webber.
Webber was instrumental in Utah Valley’s 2-0 start to the season, recording three goals over two games, including a crucial brace in the team's 5-2 victory over Detroit Mercy on Sunday night.
In the season opener at Michigan, Webber scored both the go-ahead goal in the 65th minute and the thrilling game-winner with just 27 seconds left to secure the 2-1 victory. The native of Grand Blanc, Michigan, followed up that performance with another stellar outing in her home state against Detroit Mercy, heading in a goal early in the second half to spark UVU's 5-2 comeback win and assisting on Mia Owens’ game-winner against the Titans.
“Faith has the ability to be the best forward in the country,” UVU head coach Chris Lemay said of his star goal scorer. “That’s my opinion. Maybe I’m biased, but if she plays consistently, then I think she’ll score a lot of goals again for us this year.”
Other nominees:
Kylie Olsen, DF, Utah State — The graduate defender from Logan, Utah, was named Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week after earning OUTRIGGER Kickoff Tournament MVP honors and helping the Aggies to wins over Pepperdine and Hawai’i by an aggregate score of 7-0. Olsen had a goal and an assist in a 4-0 win over the Waves, and added an assist while anchoring the back line for 67 minutes of a 3-0 win over the Rainbow Wahine.
Lynette Hernaez, GK, BYU — The sophomore goalkeeper from Corona, California, made a career-high six saves including stopping a penalty kick to lift the third-ranked Cougars to a 1-0 win over No. 19 Wisconsin in the season opener at South Field. Hernaez now has seven games of five or more saves in her collegiate career before a three-game road trip beginning Thursday at No. 12 Saint Louis.
