Salt City College Soccer Player of the Week: Tess Werts, FW, Utah State
Every week of the 2024 season, Salt City FC will recognize a top Division I women's soccer player from Utah for excellence on the field.
Utah State women’s soccer is climbing to heights never before reached in Aggie Country.
Tess Werts was the latest sherpa.
The junior forward helped the first-time nationally ranked Aggies (then at No. 19) improve to 5-0, including scoring the game-winning goal in a 2-1 road victory over then-No. 16 BYU on Saturday night.
Werts, who played her senior season at Corner Canyon High School and earned Utah all-state honors before signing with Utah State, started and played 58 minutes in a 2-0 win over Utah that snapped a seven-match losing skid to the Utes.
She then assisted on the Aggies’ opening goal in the seventh minute in Provo, and found the game-winner in the 57th minute to lift Utah State to a perfect 5-0 record.
Utah State, which climbed to No. 11 in the latest United Soccer Coaches’ poll, will travel to Orem this week to face Utah Valley (2-2-1) at 7 p.m. MT Thursday before returning home to Logan to host Pacific (1-4) on Sunday afternoon.
