The new era begins
Major League Soccer's 2023 season kicks off Saturday, and the league looks a lot different than the last time any matches were played. So does this newsletter, for that matter.
MLS is Back.
No, there’s not an opening-day tournament of the same name as the one in Orlando, when Major League Soccer tried to restart its season amid the COVID-19 pandemic. But the 2023 MLS regular season kicks off Saturday, and things are looking a little bit different.
But before you finish signing up for Apple TV, download the app, and add MLS Season Pass to watch every game this week for free (no, really; it’s all beyond the paywall for Opening Weekend), and dive into Real Salt Lake’s season opener at Vancouver, let’s get to a few changes around here.
MLS will look a little bit different in 2023, from the 29th team in St. Louis to an expanded playoff field to an all-streaming broadcast partnership on Apple TV that is free of blackouts and regional sports networks. So will we.
We’re going with a new look — a re-themed skin, for all you gamer folks out there — in anticipation of the 2023 look. It’s time to update our look, slim down a bit, and bust out a cleaner design as we head into a new era along with the league.
The new logo is simply a sign that things are changing around here. We won’t spoil all of new niceties, but there are going to be new ways of engaging with our content over here on the ol’ Salt City FC newsletter, as well as a return of Ye Ole Podcast that many of you found to first discover us. We’ll be back on the feed after Real Salt Lake’s season opener at Vancouver, so give us a follow on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher or where ever you’ve listened to us before.
We’re also expanding, bringing in new writers and voices to help contribute to this space covering more than just RSL, but soccer across the state of Utah. So if you’re interested in contributing to Salt City FC — even beyond the MLS space, whether it be Real Monarchs, USL League Two, or even college, high school or club soccer — drop us a message and let us know your interest. Our front porch is always available to sit down and chat.
Finally, we’re opening up the newsletter to advertisers, because covering the Beautiful Game — while largely a labor of love in this country — can be expensive. We don’t want to turn on a paywall on this outlet, at least not yet (we may turn on Pledges on the Substack soon, for those who are interested in letting us know they might be willing to stuff the tip jar and support this venture, but no charges we aren’t asking fo rmoney). But if you or your business has anything you’d like to help advertise to our readership, both the ones that sign up via email and those who read on Ye Old Interwebs, drop us a line as well. We can talk through specific price rates that work for your company, and hopefully come to an accord that benefits everyone.
But again, we’re trying to build a community here on Substack and beyond. So get involved, sign up for an account, download the app, and engage with us in our comments and threads. We’ll try to make it worth your while.
Of course, we’re also available on social media. So give us a like, a follow or both on Facebook, or Twitter, or even Instagram and YouTube. More content will be rolling out in the coming days, and we can’t wait to continue building something new with you.
