Utah State freshman Kaitlyn Richins deserves to be highlighted.
The 5-foot-10 midfielder from Layton scored an absolute golazo in the Aggies’ 5-0 win Sunday over Idaho State in the home opener, matching an all-time mark for largest margin of defeat against the Bengals.
Nursing a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute, Richins bent a ball from the top left corner of the 18 that bent under the crossbar in the upper right corner to double Utah State’s advantage in the rout.
Richins wasn’t done yet, as she also had an assist for three points in her first career game at home. The former four-year letterwinner at Layton High that included the 2018 Utah state championship redshirted the 2021 season, and was more than a little excited for her first home game in an Aggie uniform.
“I was so excited to play on our field,” she said. “It’s perfect, the weather was perfect. I’m jut grateful and blessed to play.”
Richins was named Mountain West Freshman of the Week after her first week’s performance, which also included Tallied four shots and two shots on goal in 124 minutes on the pitch with a 2-2 road draw against Northern Arizona.
Utah State takes its 1-0-1 record into Thursday, when the Aggies host Illinois State at 5 p.m. MT in the the second of a three-match homestand.
