The club is reportedly finalizing a deal for Portuguese attacking midfielder Diogo Gonçalves from Danish club FC Copenhagen, according to Tom Bogert from GiveMeSport and Denmark’s Farzam Abolhosseini.
Real Salt Lake is pushing its chips to the center of the table and going all-in on the 2024 season.
The club is finalizing a deal for Portuguese attacking midfielder Diogo Gonçalves from Danish club FC Copenhagen, according to Tom Bogert from GiveMeSport and Denmark’s Farzam Abolhosseini.
RSL has signed the experienced UEFA Champions League veteran as a Designated Player through the end of the 2026 Major League Soccer season, with club options for both 2027 and 2028, the team announced Friday.
Terms of the deal were not released, but Bogert reported a transfer fee in the range of $3 million. RSL will have a DP spot available via Matt Crooks, whose salary/transfer can be bought down using targeted allocation money.
“I am very happy to arrive at Real Salt Lake and take this step forward in my career,” said Gonçalves, now training in Utah with RSL as ge reunited with former Benfica teammate Chicho Arango (2017). “Major League Soccer’s growth is a great thing – this League has everything to take the next steps – and my objective is to work hard, help the Club, and obviously provide goals and assists to lift RSL to the highest level.”
Gonçalves, 27, has scored 21 goals with eight assists in 57 appearances across all competition for the Danish superclub, including 11 goals and six assists last season in Copenhagen.
He also spent time with Nottingham Forest in England, as well as Famalicão and Benfica, where he won a league title in his native Portugal.
RSL has been busy during the summer transfer window, first supplementing its attack with former Orlando winger Benji Michel, adding Australian U-23 standout Lachlan Brook on a four-year deal that includes club options in 2026 and 2027, and claiming Jamaican international defender Javain Brown off waivers from Vancouver.
